Overview

It has been over thirty years since the publication of this classic science fiction novel that changed the way we look at the stars and ourselves. From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man adventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.

This allegory about humanity's exploration of the universe, and the universe's reaction to humanity, was the basis for director Stanley Kubrick's immortal film, and lives on as a hallmark achievement in storytelling.

Ugh

I usually like science fiction, but I found this audiobook cloying. I guess I find the 2001 story dehumanizing rather than revelatory. I couldn't get past the first CD.

This book made so many complicated concepts simple for me! It was a wonderful primer to space exploration and the answer to the theoretical question of: what if humanity is not alone in the universe? Sir Arthur Clarke has presented us with a thoughtful and plausible outcome of the pursuit of that question.

I will preface this with the reason I check out books on tape is for me to listen to with my kids. With that said we found the intro by the author a bit dry and LONG. Once the story started we really enjoyed it. I am 35 and I had never seen the movie (all the way through) nor had I read the book (and I grew up in a sci-fi house!). It was a great mind stretcher at the end and we spent lots of time talking about it. We look forward to seeing the movie now.

I first read this back in the late sixties when it was first published. In many ways Mr. Clarke was amazingly good at predicting the future, though overly optomistic in our progress in space exploration. But there's much in here to delight all Clarke fans, and the foreward by Mr. Clarke himself lent a nice perspective.

I saw the movie when I was 12. Everyone told me that I didn't understand it because I hadn't read the book. So, 30 years later, I listened to the book, and it was terrific. Then I saw the movie again, and it still stunk. The author is impressive, envisioning space travel and the internet years before they happened.
