Good historical drama! If you like western drama you will like this story of the hard, rugged lives of the first fur traders who carved out a living in the vast untamed Rocky Mountain West. It also brings out the domestic violence, lonliness and greed that thrived at that time between the fur traders, their wives and the people they encountered on the trail. I did not care for the "male voices" in the story, however the ending is fresh and different. Ms. Dorian comes across as a little insecure at times in the beginning of the story, but as the story progresses she proves she is truly capable of being a strong survivor.

I tried very hard to get through this. I got to the middle of the 4th disc and gave up. Not much about the struggle of living in that time and to much about the feelings Marie had towards her husband and kids. This was a very strange book. Not entertaining at all.

An okay book.....sometime the feminist highlighting was too blatant....and I am a feminist myself! But there were times I thought, "Methinks thou protests too much!"

I have read many of Jane Kirkpatrick's books and I must say, this one wasn't up to par with some of her other books. I found myself wanting to skip sections as I felt there was a lot of filler with constantly repeating Marie’s insecurities and other situations that she went through. I love her books and will continue to read everything that she has written, however, if this had been the first book that I had listened to of hers, I wouldn’t be inclined to select another one of her books. The first book I read of Jane Kirkpatrick’s was: A Sweetness to the Soul, that is as good as a book gets
