If you want to know all about Alexander the Great and his time (just like the title says), then this is the book for you. If not, all the details will probably bore and annoy you. Apparently the recording company had the narrator return for additional recording to reflect later editions of the book, and the sound quality is different from the initial recording. But one gets used to the changes in quality after the second or so disk. There a lot of details and unfamiliar names, but for the history buff, this book is indispensible.
This was a great overview of Alexander and his time. Author goes through all the major battles and the major influences in his life. I only gave it a three because I didn't like how the book was organized, it didn't seem to flow as some of the other history books I've read.
Very good book for the History buff. It shows Alexander in a light that seems to more fit his acomplishments than some of the other writers. This book is a very easy listen.
"Supercilious" comes to mind. There is too much about the author's decisions about what she can and (especially) cannot include for my taste. It is extremely rare that I do not finish listening to a book, especially when I do not have another one in hand to start, but I sent this one back when I could not stand to hear another example of what could not be included in the review. If an author can't cover all of a subject, it's better not to mention it than to say, "That's for another volume" a dozen times. Since Alexander's reputation is largely based on his military conquests, the many details of battle included in the book were not unexpected, but half as many battle details could have told just as much about the leader.
The author set some very ambitious goals for herself with this book. She wanted to describe Alexander's accomplishments and provide high-level context of his times. Unfortunately, too often she missed her mark. More information about his campaigns and accomplishments, greater focus on the times in which he lived, or a detailed description of his impact would have been better. In this book she paints with too broad a brush.
I love history therefore I have read many versions of Alexander's travels, battles and conquests, this book was very interesting, gave a lot of detail but I was not happy with the heavy english accent of the narrator which made it difficult to understand the names of the warriors and places they went. Also I was very dissapointed because this particular set skipped in many places, that never happened to me before.
Agnes Seville somehow manages to make even one of history's most fascinating stories boring. An uneven history with little original insight. This audio version suffers from very poor sound quality.
