Overview

Shy, studious Irene Stenson and wild, privileged Pamela Webb had been the best of friends for one short high school summer. Their friendship ended the night Pamela dropped Irene off at home – and Irene walked in to discover her parents’ bodies on the kitchen floor. It was ruled a murder-suicide, and Irene fled the northern California town of Dunsley. But seventeen years later, when Pamela sends a cryptic email asking for help, Irene returns to her hometown to find her old friend has died suddenly, leaving behind a lot of ugly, unanswered questions. Caught up in a firestorm of desperate deceit and long-buried secrets, Irene knows it would probably be smarter to just pack up and leave Dunsley behind again, but her reporter’s instinct – and her own hunger to know the truth – compel her to extend her stay at the local lodge. Even more compelling is the man who runs the place – a hazel-eyed ex-Marine who’s as used to giving orders as Irene is to ignoring them. Luke Danner can see the terror beneath Irene Stenson’s confident exterior – and he is intent on protecting her. But he is also driven by passions of his own, and together they will risk far more than local gossip to sort out what happened to Pamela Webb, and what really happened on that long-ago summer night...

no good

Strongly disliked the narrator for the man. Its a familar voice ... like a news anchor. All the male voices sounded the same. So when the brothers talk to each other it was confusing. Story was ok. I liked the characters with their flaws and challenges. I enjoyed them working through those together.

I very much liked the female/male combination. The story was great! I would have like it much more if they had picked a better female narrator

A very good book. Liked the female and male voices. Really enjoyed the book.

I didn't like the male/female back-and-forth narrators. And I didn't like either narrators. They only seemed capable of doing one character voice...although they tried to change up their voice. And I didn't really like the book that much. The dialog was not well written and the story was pretty much predictable.

Characters actions are predictable, but it's an enjoyable read. I'd order book another of the same author.

Cheesy ending, but

A good read nonetheless. At first I did NOT like the male and female action of the narration, but it grew on me. Good story, great characters, good action. The ending was a little cheesy for me, but all in all a good read.

This new author (for me) shows great potential. While some of the subplots were a little weak and "too pat," the over-all plot, characters, and theme kept me intrigued. I couldn't stop wondering what would happen next! I didn't wait to just listen in my vehicle: I HAD to spend my evenings listening to it, too! The narration, both male and female, though, detracted from the book . . . but not enough to keep me from enjoying it immensely. I will look forward to the author's next book.

Like most others, I really enjoyed this story but the female narrator was terrible. At the beginning of the story, it sounded like her false teeth fell out a little bit. She was way too old to be the character. I felt the male narrator was just "ok" and sounded older as well, not in their 30's as the characters were. I think this took a little bit away from the story because sometimes it was hard to "visualize" the characters as they should've been. Still the story was worth listening to.

Story was ok...narrator was awful

the story itself wasn't too bad. Nothing really mind blowing or new to the plot than what I've read before. However, the female narrator was TERRIBLE. She has an obvious lisp and sounds as if her tongue is too large for her mouth and cannot form the words properly. This really killed the story for me and made it difficult to get through it. The male narrator was good though.

I kind of liked the male narrator - he reminded me of the actor who played "Puddy", one of Elaine's boyfriends on Seinfeld. Neither narrator kept me from enjoying the book.

Krentz, Jayne Ann

The author of a string of New York Times bestsellers, JAYNE ANN KRENTZ uses three different pen names for each of her three "worlds". As JAYNE ANN KRENTZ (her married name) she writes contemporary romantic-suspense. She uses AMANDA QUICK for her novels of historical romantic-suspense. JAYNE CASTLE (her birth name) is reserved these days for her stories of futuristic/paranormal romantic-suspense.

"I am often asked why I use a variety of pen names," she says. "The answer is that this way readers always know which of my three worlds they will be entering when they pick up one of my books."

In addition to her fiction writing, she is the editor of, and a contributor to, a non-fiction essay collection, DANGEROUS MEN AND ADVENTUROUS WOMEN: ROMANCE WRITERS ON THE APPEAL OF THE ROMANCE published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Her commitment to her chosen genre has been strong from the very beginning of her career. Each year at the annual convention of the Romance Writers of America she participates in a special day-long workshop for librarians and speaks on the importance of the romance genre.

"The romance genre is the only genre where readers are guaranteed novels that place the heroine at the heart of the story," Jayne says. "These are books that celebrate women's heroic virtues and values: courage, honor, determination and a belief in the healing power of love."

She earned a B.A. in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz and went on to obtain a Masters degree in Library Science from San Jose State University in California. Before she began writing full time she worked as a librarian in both academic and corporate libraries.

She is married and lives with her husband, Frank, in Seattle, Washington.
