Overview

Shy, studious Irene Stenson and wild, privileged Pamela Webb had been the best of friends for one short high school summer. Their friendship ended the night Pamela dropped Irene off at home - and Irene walked in to discover her parents' bodies on the kitchen floor. It was ruled a murder-suicide, and Irene fled Dunsley, determined to wipe out every memory attached to her northern California hometown. But now she has been summoned back.
Pamela's e-mail had been short and cryptic. More alarming, it included the code word they had used as teenagers, suggesting an urgency and secrecy that puzzled Irene. What could be important enough to make her former friend get in touch after all these years? She won't find out - at least not from Pamela, who lies dead in the luxurious home of her father, a U.S. senator, pill and liquor bottles beside her. The shock has barely subsided before the rumors begin to swirl.
Irene had planned to get out of this place as quickly as possible. But her reporter's instinct - and her own hunger to know the truth - compel her to extend her stay at the local lodge. Even more compelling is the man who runs the place - a hazel-eyed ex-Marine who's as used to giving orders as Irene is to ignoring them. Luke Danner can see the terrified young girl hidden beneath Irene Stenson's black-clad, confident exterior - and he is intent on protecting her. But he is also driven by passions of his own, and together they will risk far more than local gossip to sort out what happened to Pamela Webb, and what really happened on that long-ago summer night.

A very good book. Liked the female and male voices. Really enjoyed the book.

I didn't like the male/female back-and-forth narrators. And I didn't like either narrators. They only seemed capable of doing one character voice...although they tried to change up their voice. And I didn't really like the book that much. The dialog was not well written and the story was pretty much predictable.

Characters actions are predictable, but it's an enjoyable read. I'd order book another of the same author.

Cheesy ending, but

A good read nonetheless. At first I did NOT like the male and female action of the narration, but it grew on me. Good story, great characters, good action. The ending was a little cheesy for me, but all in all a good read.

This new author (for me) shows great potential. While some of the subplots were a little weak and "too pat," the over-all plot, characters, and theme kept me intrigued. I couldn't stop wondering what would happen next! I didn't wait to just listen in my vehicle: I HAD to spend my evenings listening to it, too! The narration, both male and female, though, detracted from the book . . . but not enough to keep me from enjoying it immensely. I will look forward to the author's next book.

Like most others, I really enjoyed this story but the female narrator was terrible. At the beginning of the story, it sounded like her false teeth fell out a little bit. She was way too old to be the character. I felt the male narrator was just "ok" and sounded older as well, not in their 30's as the characters were. I think this took a little bit away from the story because sometimes it was hard to "visualize" the characters as they should've been. Still the story was worth listening to.

Story was ok...narrator was awful

the story itself wasn't too bad. Nothing really mind blowing or new to the plot than what I've read before. However, the female narrator was TERRIBLE. She has an obvious lisp and sounds as if her tongue is too large for her mouth and cannot form the words properly. This really killed the story for me and made it difficult to get through it. The male narrator was good though.

I kind of liked the male narrator - he reminded me of the actor who played "Puddy", one of Elaine's boyfriends on Seinfeld. Neither narrator kept me from enjoying the book.

Worst Narrator Ever

I enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz books, but this narration was horrible. A narrator should not have a lisp or portray characters that sound like they inhaled helium. Stopped listening after the 2nd disc. Check out Amazon reviews on this title.

good story bad narration

the story was good, but along with the other readers I found the narration to be dull and not fitting. Still worth a listen tho, as they are not annoying as some.
