Jay Winik is by far the worst lecturer I have ever heard. It was extremely painful to listen to this CD -- an experience meant only for the masochistic.

Jay Winik's text may be OK, but his delivery (i.e., spoken word) is remarkably clumsy and difficult to listen to. It took the utmost patience and stamina to make it through this set of CD's.

Very interesting. Short, but to the point and highly informative. Recommend this to history and non-history buffs alike.

Interesting, but contradictory?

I was going to pan this lecture, because during the Q&A session following the lecture, the speak er contradicts many of his points on what made April 1865 so special. It seems more like dumb luck that the Civil War didn't rip apart the country permanently. BUT... the anecdotes that are revealed about the events of that month much more than make up for this. I learned a lot, and my cocktail party conversation will benefit :)
