Overview

The FBI's former top serial-killer hunter shares his unique perspective as both a lawman and a member of the clergy counseling convicts--revealing the dangerously thin line between good and evil.

Roger L. Depue spent decades tracking down America's most depraved criminals. First as a small town police chief, then as a S.W.A.T. team member, and ultimately as head of the FBI's famed Behavioral Sciences Unit--the unit responsible for profiling and hunting serial killers--where he pioneered revolutionary law enforcement programs and techniques that remain in use today by the FBI and police departments across the globe. In his quest to comprehend the true nature of good and evil, Depue embarked on a mid-career spiritual sabbatical to become a Brother of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles, counseling maximum security inmates. With his combined experiences as both a law enforcement professional and a member of the clergy, Depue explores the criminal mind and soul as no one has ever done before.

This is a biography of the author and would be of interest as a text book to learn about him, the behavioral science unit and a little about the psychology involved. I finished it because I was interested but don't get this book if you are looking for a gripping or entertaining read.

I couldn't finish this book! When I rent a book like this, I want to hear about cases, not the details of how the Behavioral Science Unit works, or how he became a monk. There wasn't enough to keep my interest.

How can you take an interesting topic like this and turn it into something so boring my CD player couldn't take it? I guess we will just have to ask the author.

I was a little disappointed with this book because I felt that the author spent too much time on the history of his life outside the FBI, and very little time on the cases he handled while in the FBI. I was hoping for more exploration of the criminal mind and less exploration of his personal life.

Outstanding book and a must read if you are in the law enforcement community. I even enjoyed his personal sojourns as well as the case documentation. I thought the narration was excellent as well.

What is evil?

Excellent in parts, but boring in others. When he focuses on cases, methodology or the nature of evil he is excellent. However I thought that he spent too much time, particularly early on talking about his upbringing or personal life. Yes, some of it was integral, however much of it was superfluous. Still it has some very interesting things to say about the nature of evil from a man uniquely qualified to speak about the most evil of all.

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Several mornings and evenings I stayed in the car just to listen a little longer. I was entranced by the true-life story, which was a pleasantly narrated combination autobiography and true crime novel. It combined history, drama, forensics, horror, spirituality and even romance. A great "read".

This was really good, great in fact. Roger Depue is the kind of guy I'd like to sit and have dinner with. The story is well told, even if not quite what I expected. The narrator wasn't good, otherwise this may have gotten 5 stars from me. If you wonder how good and bad co-exist thsi book confirms that you are in good company. I marvel at the evil that is serial killers, rapists, etc and wonder so much about how it works in our world. This book doesn't answer the question, there is not answer, but it does offer some very thought provoking evidences of how to work through it.
