Overview

Historical Milirary Fiction: Beginning aboard the USS Olympia, Blood & Iron is the first in a planned series of six books chronicling the adventures of Levi Rankin. Fresh from the wilds of Wyoming, Young Marine Corporal Rankin is savagely tested in the Spanish American War/Battle of Manila Bay while serving under Commodore Dewey. Rankin's courage is rewarded with promotion and he comes of age and learns the lessons of leadership and betrayal in the heat of the Philippine jungles, gunboat duty on the Yellow River, and finally during the brutal Siege of Peking during the Boxer Rebellion.

hmmm .... this book seemed kind of juvenile, but of course was not written for young people. I like historical fiction for the view into events and times that were important when they happened to those involved, but which I might not know much about - and this book - briefly with the Spanish American War and more extensively with the Boxer Rebellion in China tries very hard to do that ... the author pointing out the novelty of pineapples to the American soldiers and the like, but the characters are drawn with a very broad and crude brush, and don't even approach the detail and reality of those Patrick O'Brian, Dewy Lambkin, or Martin Cruz Smith could pen in their sleep. Also - the dramatization of this book was abysmal. Half the actors had no emotion in their voices, and the narrators competence seems to render their lack of ability in even more harsh a light.

I don't know, it was a little corny in parts (especially the love scenes) but it was also informative and entertaining. As a history teacher teaching China for the first time, it was helpful to hear some of the history told in a story format. I liked this book and would rent others by this author.
