I enjoyed this book very much. The author wrote a true story of her findings in a long search for her history. Perhaps, being raised by Southerners it had a special quality to it that enamored me. The black history is a sad but Strong history. They are full of life and strength I don't know that I have. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
This book was okay. Brings home the ugliness of racial and gender discrimination. I have a feeling that the unabridged version would have been a lot better.
Overall I enjoyed the story. I too felt it was hard to keep all of the characters straight except for Elizabeth, Suzzette, Emily, and Philomene. I admired the strength of these women and how they endured through many hardships. I would recommend this book to others.
Strong women. amazing lives and tied together with family commitments, traditions and love.
It was very interesting in an educational and historic way and I really liked it. The downsides- I found myself getting confused because she goes through about 4 generations of people. At times I couldn't follow the charecters. Overall - good listen.
It was a very good book, but I did get a bit bored at times.
This is a good book, well thought out and written. The abridged version is not so good, with missing details and an abrupt ending. The first narrator made me want to scream with her slow deliberate reading with unnecessary emotion! Thank goodness she didn't read the whole book. All in all, an okay listen.
I absolutely loved this book. The last narrator wasn't my favorite, but all in all the story was captivating. The family was strong and beautiful. I would encourage you to listen.
This book was gripping and breath taking. It was also educational and depressing. It is thought provoking and a must read for anyone who really wants to appreciate every freedom and luxury available to us today.
