Overview

A slumbering Georgia community almost chokes on their mint juleps when Hollywood calls to film the true life-and-death story of a heroic local lawman. Aside from the chaos that trails in the moviemakers' wakes, one person has a very private reason for not wanting the intimate details of the gentleman's life story revealed - his widow, Grace. So begins her inventive, comic crusade to obstruct proceedings, aided and abetted by a cast of quirky eccentrics, including the movie star's personal bodyguard and a good-hearted ex-con with a private tragedy of his own. Amidst the hijinks, nobody is prepared for the heartbreaking secrets that are finally revealed, secrets that will change all of them - hero, heroine, and movie star - forever.

This is a slow moving book for the first part of it. It takes some time for the story line to become clear where we are going with the story line. It has moving characters with various twists of family tree that leads to a suprising end. Grace is defending the honor and a memory of her beloved hero husband that is dead. A movie star who has decided to write a movie script about his hero that was killed in trying to arrest a serial killer. The movie script becomes an action outragious film instead of the true facts of the man whose legend that the movie is about. Grace the widow does everything that she can to stop the movie from being made. She has encounters with the star, his sister, a mysterious strange that is friends with her grandmother, and the bodyguard who tries to do the right thing. Good story and full of funny and interesting characters.

At first listen, I was not at all interested. I almost sent it back, but decided to give it a 2nd chance. I am so glad I did. It was adorable, sweet, funny, touching, silly and just enough ridiculous built in to make it a great summer book.

I am a fan of Deborah Smith and have spent some time looking for her books in the local library...However, my wife, who has a vision problem, wanted to "read" them also via joining Simply Audiobooks, which I have done for her. She has listened to other books and how much she enjoys them depends upon how they are "read". To her the most important part of the stories is the quality of the person or persons who are the "readers". Sorry to say, but the people who read "Charming Grace" were not very talented which did not add to the entertaining story that the book was. When you listen to any book that you get from Simply Audiobooks you should pay attention to the "reader' who narrates the book and how good they are. Look for them again in any other cd's you rent. Names of narrators are not on the cd's but are identified on first cd.
