I DID NOT ENJOY THIS BOOK. I KEPT WAITING FOR SOMETHING GOOD TO HAPPEN BUT IT NEVER DID.
Wow! What a great read - and I don't even like to shop! Sophia Kinsella writes the wonderful story of a young woman who gets herself deeper and deeper into both debt and denial - it's enough to make you cringe - except the book's laugh-out-loud humor and romantic whimsy keep it incredibly compelling and fun. The way shopaholic Becky Bloomwood deals with everything is a pay off well worth it. And I must say, the reader is simply awesome! I don't remember her name (darn! I f I hadn't mailed back the CD I would pop it in and check!), but I rented this book about shopping - which I hate - putting my faith in both the talent of Sophie Kinsella, whose other books I've loved, and in the hope that the reader would be the same as in the other Kinsella books. Yay! This book did NOT disappoint. In fact, quite the opposite!
I am very surprised by the poor reviews from other readers/listeners. I thought this book was very light and entertaining. Very similar to Bridget Jones Diary, especially with the British accent. I was eager to read/listen the rest of the series.
This book went on-and on forever! I wanted to yell or go mad. the end was good, but it should only be offered in abridged format. I wanted to say WHO BLOODIE CARES get-on with it.
It took a while for me to get into this one. The first part is rather dull and mundane. But if you push through it the ending is quite a surprise. I'm actually looking forward to the second book in this series.
Boring, tedious, irritating. I couldn't even finish it. A totally clueless, unsympathetic and irritating main character. Very disappointing.
The character in this book was hard to like. She lied constantly and the overall book was very predictable. The other books by this author are better.
Oh my god, horrible. A completely unlikeable main charicter. She can't control her spending and lies about it. Then ask us to like her. BORING. I ended up just getting annoyed at her idiocy. Oh and talk about predictable, you knew what was going to happen a full chapter before.
I have to agree with an earlier reviewer on this book - I was incredibly annoyed with the main character! I suppose any book that evokes a strong reaction must be well written, but my response to this book was a strong urge to reach into the CD player and slap "Becky". She is a self-centered, irresponsible pathological liar and I found it very difficult to relate to her behavior. In most books you are supposed to like the main character and want things to work out for him/her. In this case, I was disappointed that "Becky" was never held fully responsible for her reprehensible behavior. Personally I would have liked to have seen her learn from her mistakes.
I'd give this one 2 1/2 stars because even though the main character is incredibly annoying, Kinsella's writing style is so enjoyable you want to forgive her. Rebecca Bloomwood will do just about anything to avoid reality, including believing if she dumps her bills into a dumpster than the problem will go away. She's so delusional that you quickly want to slap her. Like I said, I like Sophie Kinsella's writing and I really like the narration, but this book basically could have been about 15 chapters shorter. Because the main character does not go through any kind of growth until the very end of the book, and then its ridiculous luck that helps her out, not any real effort on her part.
