This is an incredibly well written moving story. I looked forward to getting in the car every morning so that I could continue listening to it. The characters are well developed and easy to empathize with. I loved it.
As a born South African I found that the choice of narrator was difficult to endure.I lasted only 2 discs before abandoning the book. The multitude of accents in South Africa warranted a South African as the narrator.
It is a joy to listen to this audiobook. It is an important book, but also an edifying and entertaining one. The reader has a beautiful musical voice very appropriate to the subject. So, don't be put off by the "importance" of the novel, just enjoy it.
This was an interesting story about family and country. I wish I knew more about South Africa during the era in which the book was written - I think I would have understood more of the context and political background. It is strange for me to listen to modern stories in which blacks and whites are treated so differently. It has made me more curious to learn about the struggles of the blacks in Africa.
Excellent book. Excellent reading. Spellbinding. This was hard to put down.
This is a wonderful book, but I enjoyed reading it much better than listening to it. I couldn't get past the narrator's snooty sounding voice. It seemed very affected. Also, when the women addressed the main character, it was annoying.
It may have been a good book but I had a hard time getting through the first half so I did not listen to the second half. I had a hard time with the reader also.
Outstanding! A little hard to follow in the very beginning but that's only the first chapter (the Prelude perhaps). I loved the story lines, the realness of it. It was very, very good!!!
I truly enjoyed "reading" this wonderful sad story. This is an easy "read", slow paced, simple to follow and understand. Not too much action or suspense, but plenty of calm, poetic beauty. When "acting out" characters, the narrator employed heavy accent. Although it did sound like some of my African friends, it was somewhat distracting.
REALLY HAD A HARD TIME LISTENING TO THIS. I DID NOT FIND IT VERY INTERESTING.
