Overview

Lord Cazaril has been, in turn, courtier, castle-warder, and captain; now he is but a crippled ex-galley slave seeking nothing more than a menial job in the kitchens of the Dowager Provincara, the noble patroness of his youth. But Cazaril finds himself promoted to the exalted and dangerous position of tutor to Iselle, the beautiful, fiery sister of the heir to Chalion’s throne.

Amidst the decaying splendor and poisonous intrigue of Chalion’s ancient capital, Cazaril is forced to confront not only powerful enemies but also the malignant curse that clings to the royal household, trapping him, flesh and soul, in a maze of demonic paradox, damnation, and death for as long as he dares walk the five-fold pathway of the gods.

Great book!

I loved this book. I thought the narrator did a great job with all the voices. Especially the main character's voice, Lord Cazaril. He sounded like Campbell Scott a little, one of my favorite narrators. I really enjoyed the silent hero type portrayed by Cazaril and found myself routing for him and his charge Iselle, an equally likeable and admirable young female character. There's love and betrayal and intrigue and mystery and a nice moral to the story. After 15 CD's I found I was always interested and could have listed to 15 more.

The Curse of Chalion

Exceptional! The author has an unparalleled ability to paint portraits of characters that are both realistic and entertaining. This one gets you from the start and keeps interest high throughout. This is not the usual formula driven sword and sorcery novel where action dictates pace, rather this novel lets character development dictate pace and story.

I loved this book. Bujold has created a fully-realized world with a believable societal structure and a wonderful religious framework. Her plotting is exquisite and her details are sumptuous. I hope that she keeps writing in this world.
