Overview

Jon Stewart, host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show, and his coterie of patriots, deliver a hilariouslook at American government.

American-style democracy is the world's most beloved form of government, which explains why so many other nations are eager for us to impose it on them. But what is American democracy? In AMERICA (THE BOOK), Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff offer their insights into our unique system of government, dissecting its institutions, explaining its history and processes, and exploring the reasons why concepts like one man, one vote, government by the people, and every vote counts have become such popular urban myths. Topics include: Ancient Rome: The First Republicans; The Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted, and White; The Media: Can it Be Stopped?; and more!

Stewart and Colbert are Gods!

Written by Dennis K on July 10th, 2008

I always enjoy the delivery of both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert along with their brilliant writers. Although it took a little while to get used to just listening to them as opposed to seeing them (facial expressions and breaks for laughter), it was a very good listen. As stated by many, a basic understanding of our government and history are a must. I assume it would be a bit tedious not knowing to what they are making jabs.

It's Your America - Take it or Leave it

If you are a fan of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, you will love this tongue-in-cheek look at the formation of our nation and some pokes Founding Fathers and Mothers (FMILFs). Canadians beware, this book reveals way too much truth about your policital juggernaut also.

I usually like Jon Stewart, but I didn't think this was funny at all. I barely got through the first disk, then sent it back before finishing. Maybe it's just not within my sense of humor.

Not Stewart's Best

I couldn't even get through the first CD. I didn't find it funny at all, and in fact it was quite boring. Not worth it, if you like Stewart watch him on the daily show instead.

Love Jon Stewart

I love Jon Stewart though this book was hard for me to listen to. I don't believe it was the book though. It was me. Certain things I have to actually read and I believe this is one of them. I plan to do that since I found myself "zoning out" too many times. What I did hear and pay attention to I liked.

Not for those who take themselves too seriously

This is wonderfully fun for those who *get it*. I'm sure it's like a joke in a foreign language for those who don't know enough about American history to see what makes it funny. I laughed out loud repeatedly...it was cleverly crafted with tongue inserted firmly into cheek. I loved it!

Junior High School Geek Fodder

Seems to me like this title was 'underabridged'. Yes, there is good history presented in a clever manner, but to me it was a just a series of 'wise cracks' with enough gratuitous profanity to attract the interests of young boys looking for something naughty to brag. You may like what you hear in the first disk, but if not, understand that the other two are just more of the same.

Brilliant

As some of the reviews suggest, you will enjoy this book much more if you have a understanding of the US political system and knowing some it's history will certainly help. Not for the mindless.

America

Sometimes it made me laugh out loud and sometimes I found it a little tedious because I didn't get the jokes. That may be because I am Canadian and didn't know a lot of American History before hearing it. All in all it was a great way to learn some US History, which I wanted to do because I live in the States now.

America The Book

Remember everything you learned about American History in elementary school? If Jon Stewart had been my teacher, I would have spent more focused awake time in the classroom. This puts a delightful and humanized viewpoint on all those Founding Characters. It also brings back to excruciating conscienceness the falliblity and fobiles of our government.
