Overview

When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands...

I love this book and read it awhile ago. I decided to rent it so that I could hear it while doing other stuff. The voice the reader used for the dragon was so distracting that I didn't last through the whole book because of it.

A very engaging story in a world of magic and sorcery. The creation of the characters is richly accomplished and is the strength of the book. Being the first in the series, the book leaves you in a good place and allows one to decide whether to continue on with the series. I for one have already ordered the second, Eldest.

What a beautiful story. I truly didn't want it to end, but alas, I rented Eldest! The narrator's ability to bring each character to life was impressive. This is a story for all ages.

I really didn't think that I would like this book. I thought it would be like reading Harry Potter or LotR again, but once I got into it I wound up wanting to listen to it again and again. I loved the narrator's character voices! He was definitely a perfect match for this book.

This is a well written story, but I did have some problems with the reader. Most of the reading is terrific, but the voice he used for the dragon sounds like the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. Sorry, but I really had trouble getting past that. I tried to last the whole book since most of the reading was well done, but I finally quit since the dragon voice irritated me so much.

Paolini is a wunderkind

I have listened to the first two books in the Inheritance trilogy, which is now going to be four books by the way. Eragon, like the second book Eldest, is very well written and extraordinarily well narrated. The narrator somehow manages dozens of characters and provides a unique voice and persona for each one. I was surprised to find out that Christopher Paolini is so incredibly young, 15 when he started writing Eragon. He writes beyond his years, creating a rich world in which his story line and his characters can develop. If you enjoy fantasy genre books you WILL enjoy this one.

I loved this book. The narrator did a great job and kept my interest even though it is a very long book. I can't wait to read the next in the series!

Paolini, Christopher

Christopher Paolini was raised in the Paradise Valley, Montana area. His family members include his parents, Kenneth Paolini and Talita Hodgkinson, and his sister, Angela Paolini.[1] Home schooled for the duration of his education, Paolini graduated from high school at the age of 15 through a set of accredited correspondence courses from American School of Correspondence in Lansing, Illinois. Following graduation, he started his work on what would become the novel Eragon and its sequel Eldest, both set in the kingdom of Alagaësia.

In 2002, Eragon was published by Paolini International LLC, Paolini's parents' company. To promote the book, Paolini toured over 135 schools and libraries, discussing reading and writing, all the while dressed in "a medieval costume of red shirt, billowy black pants, lace-up boots, and a jaunty black cap."[1] Paolini created the cover art for the first edition of Eragon, which featured Saphira's eye. He also drew the maps on the inside covers of his books.[2]

In Summer 2002, the stepson of author Carl Hiaasen found Eragon in a bookstore and loved it, and Hiaasen brought it to the attention of his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.[3][4] Knopf subsequently made an offer to publish Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance cycle. The second edition of Eragon was published by Knopf in August 2003. At the age of nineteen, Paolini became a New York Times bestselling author.[5] Eragon has since been adapted into a film of the same name.

Paolini's essay "It All Began with Books" was included in the April 2005 anthology Guys Write for Guys Read.

Eldest, the sequel to Eragon, was released August 23, 2005. The third book in the cycle, Brisingr, was released on September 20, 2008.[6] Although the Inheritance cycle was planned as a trilogy, the details for the Brisingr had to be expanded to include a fourth book.[7]
