Overview

New York Times best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith’s critically acclaimed No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series continues in this engaging book that won the first ever Saga Award for Wit, given to the wittiest British book of the year. Mma Ramotswe has been engaged to Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni for quite some time, yet still they have no wedding date. And now Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni has other things on his mind. He has been tricked into performing a parachute jump to benefit charity. The cupboard of life is full indeed in this charming, gently funny novel.

I always enjoy hearing stories of Mma Ramotswe and Mr. JLB Matekoni. The reader is wonderful, too, and makes all the difference. I love being swept away into a different culture, and a much slower paced lifestyle - especially during my commute.

I have to confess - I could never read Alexander McCall Smith's books. They're too slow without much action, and the action that is there is slow action, if you know what I mean. However, I have enjoyed listening to them very much - they're engaging stories to hear and the reader has a marvelous accent and reading cadance. If you need blood, guts, gore, stuff happening all the time, make another selection. But if you enjoy likeable characters, perspectives on other people's lives, good stories and bush tea, then this is the series for you.

These are a good series of books. As another reviewer said, they offer a unique view into another culture. However, they also give a good perspective on life and having a good attitude toward daily living.

This book is my favorite of the series. McCall-Smith continues to develop the characters and present both amusing and poignant story lines. The sense of place remains very strong. I particularly enjoyed the fact that as some storylines were wrapped up, others are just beginning. I hope the author continues to write this marvelous series!

I will admit that I have fallen in love with these books. They take you to such a different place and culture so effectively. The actor does a great job of story telling. The books are not always a full story but do provide very entertaining incidents from life very different from my own.
