Overview

Tracy Chevalier had published her first novel and was wondering what to write next. Her eyes fell on a poster of a Vermeer painting which has hung in her bedroom since she was 19 years old. As she idly contemplated the face of the girl in the painting, she suddenly thought, "I could write about her."

Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of Griet, a 16-year-old Dutch girl, who becomes a maid in the house of the painter Johannes Vermeer. Her calm and perceptive manner not only helps her in her household duties, but also attracts Vermeer's attention. He slowly draws her into the world of his paintings and ultimately has her sit for him as a model.

In this richly imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired on of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings, Tracy Chevalier transports readers to a bygone time and place. History and fiction merge seamlessly in a luminous tale of artistic vision, sensual awakening, and daily life in 17th-century Delft.

I love historical fiction and this was such a wonderful story, I played it twice. I love the name Griet...thinking about giving my next child that name!

The pleasant story drew me, allowing me to imagine the Griet's observations of 17 century Dutch life while giving me a glimpse into the complex domestic tensions of the anachronistic household. Griet is a quietly perceptive young character read well by the narrator. However, I simply could not stand the narrator's interpretation of Vermeer - the voice is too slow-paced and throaty for my taste. All in all, a good listen that will always affect how I look at the painting.

Another fine Chevalier novel. The narrator does get a bit monotone, but the author does a good job of creating a story behind the masterpiece. Makes one want to study the painting in more detail.

Tracy Chevalier draws us into her stories so that we emphasize with her characters. The author tells the story of Griet and the painting while taking us back to 17th Century Europe and it’s “cast” system. Very enchanting tale, one that I did not want to end.

The book was soooo much better than the movie. The book describes the thoughts going through Griet's mind and the proprieties of that era... I couldn't stop listening to it and was sorry it was over at the end.

I was pleasantly surprised at the author's ability to turn a simple story into a tale of passionate emotions. The narrarator fit the character Greit (the girl with the pearl earring). Quick, easy listening.

I loved listening to this book. I had read it a couple of years ago but I got so much more out of it by listening to it. The characters really came alive for me and the reader was terrific.

Chevalier, Tracy

"""I was born and grew up in Washington, DC. After getting a BA in English from Oberlin College (Ohio), I moved to London, England in 1984. I intended to stay 6 months; I'm still here.

""As a kid I'd often said I wanted to be a writer because I loved books and wanted to be associated with them. I wrote the odd story in high school, but it was only in my twenties that I started writing ?real' stories, at night and on weekends. Sometimes I wrote a story in a couple evenings; other times it took me a whole year to complete one.

""Once I took a night class in creative writing, and a story I'd written for it was published in a London-based magazine called Fiction. I was thrilled, even though the magazine folded 4 months later.

I worked as a reference book editor for several years until 1993 when I left my job and did a year-long MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich (England). My tutors were the English novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain. For the first time in my life I was expected to write every day, and I found liked it. I also finally had an idea I considered ?big' enough to fill a novel. I began The Virgin Blue during that year, and continued it once the course was over, juggling writing with freelance editing.

""An agent is essential to getting published. I found my agent Jonny Geller through dumb luck and good timing. A friend from the MA course had just signed on with him and I sent my manuscript of The Virgin Blue mentioning my friend's name. Jonny was just starting as an agent and needed me as much as I needed him. Since then he's become a highly respected agent in the UK and I've gone along for the ride."""
