Overview

This memoir takes the reader from the rather curious childhood of John Sergeant and his somewhat eccentric parents to his flirtation with show business as part of the sixties satire boom - he appeared in a post-Beyond the Fringe television comedy show written by and starring Alan Bennett; and from his early years in journalism on the Liverpool Post to his long career at the BBC. Memorably handbagged by Margaret Thatcher on the steps of the Paris Embassy when she failed to win the Conservative leadership contest, and the recipient of Ron Davis's confessions about his midnight perambulations on Clapham Common, Sergeant has been the man on the spot in most of the major news stories since the late 1970s. His mordant wit, keen sense of the absurd and acute powers of analysis pervade the audio book. He was a wealth of anecdotes featuring many key political figures and his understanding of the labyrinthine workings of Westminster - and of the corridors of Broadcasting House - is second to none.

Hearing different world events from a uniquely British perspective was very enlightening. I think I need to check out some British Autobiographies.
