Overview

The story of Gods and Generals begins with Michael Shaara, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic "The Killer Angels. A native of New Jersey, Michael Shaara grew to be an adventurous young man: over the years, he found work as a sailor, a paratrooper, a policeman, and an English professor at Florida State University. In 1952, his son Jeff was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Michael's interest in Gettysburg was prompted by some letters written by his great-grandfather, who had been wounded at the great battle while serving with the 4th Georgia Infantry. In 1966, he took his family on a vacation to the battlefield and found himself moved.
In 1970, Michael Shaara returned to Gettysburg with his son Jeff. The pair crisscrossed the historic site, gathering detailed information for the father's novel-in-progress. In 1974, the novel was published with the title "The Killer Angels. This gripping fictional account of the three bloody days at Gettysburg won Michael Shaara a Pulitzer Prize and a vast, appreciative audience. To date it has sold two million copies.
When Michael Shaara died in 1988, his son Jeff began to manage his literary estate. It was a legacy he knew well, having helped his father create it. When director Ron Maxwell filmed the movie "Gettysburg, based on "The Killer Angels, he asked Jeff to serve as a consultant. Maxwell encouraged Shaara to continue the story his father began; inspired, Jeff planned an ambitious trilogy, with "The Killer Angels as the centerpiece, following the war from its origins to itsend.
With Gods and Generals, Jeff Shaara gives fans of "The Killer Angels everything they could have asked--an epic, brilliantly written saga that brings the nation's greatest conflict to life.

I love the Civil war. This book gives you a quick history of the battles at the begining of the war. An unabriged version would have been better. You would have gotten a better feel for the battles and a better background of General Jackson. All in all this was a very good book to listen too.

I like this book overall. I have read all 3 of the series: Gods & Generals, The Killer Angels and the Last Full Measure. Nothing can overtake Killer Angels in its intensity, detail and true story, however, this book is fascinating for any history buff. The problem is that it crams too much (start of civil war to chancellorsville) into a small book.

I sent it back before I finished it. It just dragged for me even though it was a topic that particulary interests me. I also didn't care for the narrator's charactor expressions.

I sent it back before I finished it - it just dragged for me. Would have been better if I enjoyed I enjoyed reading about the era more. It was more that I lost interest because it is not a topic that particulary interests me in the first place. A bad choice for me - not necessarily the book.

The book itself is very good, but the narration was done on such a low tone. It was hard to hear while driving.

Shaara, Jeff

"Jeff Shaara was born in 1952 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and graduated from Florida State University in 1974, with a degree in Criminology. From age 16, Jeff operated a rare coin business, first out of his home, then in a retail store. In 1974, he moved to Tampa, Florida, and the business expanded. Eventually, Florida Coin Exchange became one of the most widely known precious-metals dealers in Florida. In 1988, Jeff's father, Michael Shaara, died, and Jeff made the decision to sell his business, and take over the management of his father's estate.

In 1993, during production of the Turner film ""Gettysburg,"" based on his father's classic novel, The Killer Angels, Jeff became friends with film director Ron Maxwell, who had been close to Michael Shaara for the many years it took to bring The Killer Angels to the screen. After the critical and commercial success of ""Gettysburg,"" Maxwell approached Jeff about the possibility of continuing the story, finding someone to write a prequel and sequel to The Killer Angels. After some considerable soul-searching, Jeff decided to try to tackle the project himself. The decision was difficult in many ways, but most challenging because Jeff had no previous experience as a writer.

Two years later, Ballantine Books published Jeff's first novel, Gods and Generals, the prequel to his father's great work. Two weeks after its debut, Gods and Generals leapt onto the New York Times Bestseller List, and rode a fifteen-week wave as a national bestseller. Critics nationwide praised the book and Jeff's writing ability. No one was more surprised than Jeff himself. In 1998, the sequel, The Last Full Measure, was published, with the same result: Thirteen weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List, and universal praise from critics and fans nationwide.

Now a full time author, Jeff has recently completed his third novel for Ballantine, Gone for Soldiers, which will be released in the May 2000, and is beginning research on more historical projects.

Jeff, his wife Lynne, and their two cats divide their time between Florida and New York."
