Overview

Here is the story behind one of the most remarkable Internet successes of our time. Based on scrupulous research and extraordinary access to Google, the book takes you inside the creation and growth of a company whose name is a favorite brand and a standard verb recognized around the world. Its stock is worth more than General Motors' and Ford's combined, its staff eats for free in a dining room that used to be run by the Grateful Dead's former chef, and its employees traverse the firm's colorful Silicon Valley campus on scooters and inline skates.
THE GOOGLE STORY is the definitive account of the populist media company powered by the world's most advanced technology that in a few short years has revolutionized access to information about everything for everybody everywhere.
In 1998, Moscow-born Sergey Brin and Midwest-born Larry Page dropped out of graduate school at Stanford University to, in their own words, "change the world" through a search engine that would organize every bit of information on the Web for free.
While the company has done exactly that in more than one hundred languages, Google's quest continues as it seeks to add millions of library books, television broadcasts, and more to its searchable database.
Readers will learn about the amazing business acumen and computer wizardry that started the company on its astonishing course; the secret network of computers delivering lightning-fast search results; the unorthodox approach that has enabled it to challenge Microsoft's dominance and shake up Wall Street. Even as it rides high, Google wrestles with difficult choices that will enable it to continue expanding while sustaining the guiding vision of itsfounders' mantra: DO NO EVIL.

Very interesting. I'd listen again! Inspiring for breaking out of our molds and thinking about possibilities. We really can do the things we dream up.

Great detail....sometimes too much. I got a lot out of this book. I believe that if I was more of an "IT" person, I would have understood more of the book. However, it was a great book with an example of how a simple idea can gain so much momentum. Put it in your must read list.

If you're actually interested to understand the mentality that makes Google as quirky as it is, the book pretty much gets there. You'll have to put up with some shameless self promotion along the way, but you can handle it. If you're looking for a classic of contemporary culture, well, maybe next time.

As an avid user of their website, it was interesting to learn about how the company got started. It goes to show that hard work and alot of faith can definitely bring you success! I learned a few things about the services Google provides that I didn't know previously.

Their story is amazing their is no doubt about them. however this book felt more like an essay then an inside story. The writing is o.k. I did learn about a lot of othe products google developed that I wasnt aware of before.

I use Google everyday and found this account of how the business grew to be fascinating - I think that Sergey Brin and Larry Page have created an amazing tool that has changed the way I operate in business and at home and I was intrigued by their story. I have suggested the book to my 18 year old son - although I would warn anyone born after 1970 that you'll feel somewhat "antique" when you finish this one!!

The book is more business then technical. It's a fascinating read but will get dated quickly. Unfortunately I found the book to be less critical of Google then it should have been, they never really criticized Google at all and white washed some of their questionably evil practices. Overall I would still recommend it to anyone interested in Internet business and / or technology, and as with all books take with a gain of salt.

I found the audiobook to be a bit long winded. Although I want companies who champion creativity and service to succeed, I cant listen to them 'toot their own horn' for hours and hours on end. Now, this book is not a company sponsored press release or anything, but this author, and narrator are so upbeat about everything, it felt more like a corporate training video rather than a 'biography'. All the best to Sergey and Larry and the spirit behind Google, Im just not sure I need 10 hours of 'google glee' to reconfirm what I already felt.
