Overview

In this superb collection, named one of the five best books of fiction for 2001 by The New York Times, characters are subtly revealed and personal stories unfold in rich detail. The fate of a housekeeper is unintentionally reversed by a teenage girls practical joke. A college student visiting her aunt stumbles on a long-hidden secret and its meaning in her own life. And an inveterate philanderer finds the tables turned when he puts his wife into an old-age home. Vivid, external perceptions are complemented and balanced by a more exploratory, inwardly poetic kind of writing. The New York Times

No one tells a short story better than Alice Munro.

Subtle and amazing!

I loved this collection of short stories enough to suggest it as a book club reading. I wasn't crazy about the first story, but all the others were outstanding, especially the last one 'The Bear goes over the Mountain". All stories are a bit sad and like someone said, not a whole lot of action, but a lot of inner dialogue and life lessons. Some stories will haunt me like the one of the science teacher who is pushed out of his teaching because he refuses to address the biblical creationist theory in his class room. A definite must to listen to, also the reader was very good. I have ordered more of Alice Munro's titles.

Good reader, some great stories, and this book includes "The Bear Went Over the Mountain," the story that the film "Away from Her" is based on.

A Powerful Introduction to Alice Munro

I confess that, much as I read, I have never happened upon Alice Munro.....I was concerned that this collection of short stories (each very different) would be hard to listen to on audiotape (would the stories blur?). But I came away truly touched by her story-telling ability.....and very, very pleased by the ability of sound to carry the subtleties and inflections of the stories....Highly recommended.....

A Bit Boring

It was hard getting through this. In fact I didn't even listen to the last 2 stories. They all seemed to start out so well and by the end you are expecting something exciting to happen, but it never does. These are basically just stories about everyday people and relationships. The reader's voice was annoying which is a big thing for me when listening to audio books. I want a reader that reads well and has a nice voice. Overall I am glad I did rent this selection, because a few of the stories were OK and it was so different from what I usually read and listen to, but I could never listen to it again.
