Bill Baldwin’s Bestselling Science Fiction Series Returns!

One of the few survivors of a League sneak attack on his poor and miserable homeworld of Carescria, Wilf Brim sets out to settle the score. Were it not for the attrition from the war that followed, Wilf would never have escaped his lower-class status and been accepted into the Academy. Now, freshly graduated, young Sublieutenant Wilf Ansor Brim, Imperial Fleet, begins his first assignment, Helmsman of the I.F.S. Truculent.

Fun, Fast, anf Enjoyable

This is an audiobook done as a full cast production from the now defunct Timberwolf publishers out of Texas. Having followed the series deeply, I had one of the first copies available. It is a loose story of a young sub-lieutenant, Wilf Brim, and his first adventures aborad an Imperial destroyer in the Great War. The author scoped his series using an equivalent history from WW1 through the 30's and into WW2. This first book is in a setting equal to 1917/18 but with starships, convoys and sneaky bad guys. It is a lot of fun and had some unique characters (such as the Sodeskyan "bears", who make up a lot of the engineers), and is a fun, easy listening if you like basic space opera sci-fi. A great series, which unfortunately, only had the first 2 books made into audio books. Well worth the time to listen to.

Good Military Sci-Fi

Wow, it must be twenty years ago that I first read this series of books and the 'science' still holds up reasonably well. Yeah, the romance is sort of clunky and forced, but the action more than offsets it. Sort of reminds me of the early David Weber 'Honor Harrington' books before Weber turned so dark and bleak. I thought this audio production was well-done and a lot of fun to listen to. It was great to actually have women do the women's voices and men do the men. And while they threw in some audio effects, it wasn't extremely excessive like some of the Star Wars audio books. If you like military sci-fi, I think you will enjoy listening to this book. Hopefully, we will eventually get others from this series. Duane

The Helmsan

Servicable but not exceptional space opera. The battle scenes are well written, but the romance is sometimes clunky. So is the poetry that forms a bond between the romantic couple. The prejudice some aristocrats have against the helmsman's low birth helps keep things interesting, as does Barbous, the extremely competent rating, and the two ursine Sodiskayans (sp?). The producer, however, must have been having lunch--frequently--during the production. The narrator consistently mispronounces some words, such as "admirALity" for "admiralty," "bo" for "bow" (as in the forepart of the ship), "doughy" for "doughty," and "kurtier" for "courtier."
