Overview

Author of the New York Times best-selling Mrs. Murphy mysteries, Rita Mae Brown delivers the goods with The Hunt Ball, the most entertaining entry yet in her popular foxhunting series. When a faculty member of the local prep school is murdered, the headmistress and “Sister” Jane Arnold, master of the foxhounds at Virginia’s Jefferson Hunt Club, work together to uncover a killer. It seems the slaying may have been politically motivated, as students were demonstrating to call attention to the role of slavery in the school’s past. With the annual hunt ball approaching, the 70-something Sister already has plenty on her plate. Does she have time to catch a murderer?

Better to Read in print

My room mate and I agreed after a short time of listening to this that we were very confused about the charactors, which was saying what or doing what. I think we would enjoy this if we picked it up in print sometime.

I am enjoying listening to Rita Mae Brown read her Fox Hunting Series. I love dogs, horses and a good mystery. Ms Brown puts it all together in a fast pace exciting story. Recommend this book to anyone looking for something just a bit different or who enjoy books with animals.

If you are already a fan..

If you are already a fan of Rita Mae Brown's foxhunting series featuring Sister Jane Arnold, then The Hunt Ball will not disappoint. If you like the Sneaky Pie mystery series, and want to try this series, then start with the first Sister Jane Arnold book. The books are written to stand alone but this one in particular will have a bigger payoff at the conclusion if you already know the recurring characters. If you are a horse person and would enjoy long but entertaining descriptions of foxhunting (and I am one of those people)then the book is a fun few hours spent with Sister Jane and friends get to the bottom of another murder. If you don't like horses, foxhunting or "talking" animals, skip the novel. I don't think the basic plot and rather stilted dialogue will engage non-animal oriented readers. I did enjoy hearing the author read her novel, she is not professional but very listenable.

This story is slow starting and not much discussion about the killing, but if you like fox hunting this book is for you. The author reads this book as well and is quite monotone. sounds like she has been a long time smoker.

Too much fox!

Somwhere in this novel was a very good plot. However, I was bored to tears with the seemingly every other chapter fox hunt. The plot itself seemed to take a far away back seat to fox hunting. The author seemed to be obsessed with this sport. I thought the story was quite good and had a good ending. But it was all I could do to get through it. This was the first story by this author I'd ever heard, and it will be the last.

"Hunt Club"

Kinda boring. About half fox hunt stuff and half mystery - and the mystery isn't great. Read by the author, which was probably not a great choice. Her voice falls off a lot, and it's hard to hear her all the time. OK, if you like an easy sort of mystery story with flat characters - and LOTS of fox hunting philosophy.
