Overview

Perhaps the greatest poem of the Western world, The Iliad tells the story of fifty critical days towards the end of the Trojan war. Achilles has quarrelled with Agamemnon and sulks in his tent, while Hector brings his Trojans to the brink of victory; but fate will have the last word.

Sent back unfinished

For the first time ever I have sent a book back unfinished. It was well narrated but the story is just dull dull dull.

Good reading

The reader has a good voice, and the translation flows well. Any tediousness the story might have is the fault of Homer's love of detail, not of the production. Recommended.

This is how The Iliad is meant to be heard

I had read Fagles new translation, but nothing prepared me for the powerful and almost musical reading. This is how the Iliad should be heard -- it is a poem meant to be heard, not read, and the fabulous translation makes this accessible and easy to understand. A few parts are tedious (the enumeration of soldiers and ships gets quite long), but this is a compelling story. The narration is clear and easy to understand, evenly paced without dragging. Definitely a recommendation!

Almost Unable to be Listened to

I am sorry, but the combination of this reader and the old english of this translation makes this book almost unabe to be listened to on CD. It is tough enough to read old english. The when you add the factor of having to concetrate while someone reads it it steals even the joy of the story. I agree with the last reviewer as well that there are great gaps cut that I think went to far. I found myself wishing there was a "NIV" or modern English version of the text. It isn't like Shakespeare, we are not exactly trying to stay true to the text by reading the original language. Has anyone seen a modern english version?

A little short

I love the Illiad. The reader was great, but I thought the abr version of the story was cutting it a little short.

Ancient Blood and Gore

The narration is good, but be prepared: The Iliad is just one long war, with fight after fight after fight as hero after hero meets their demise. If this is your idea of a good time, and you think names like "Antilochus" and "Polydorus" are neat, get it!
