This is the second novel in the Forsyte Chronicle, which should be read in order. Galsworthy's characters are subtly drawn, there is plenty of irony but not cycicism, and there is enough plot to hold one's interest. For a portrayal of upper middle class life in England around the turn of the twentieth century, Galsworthy is hard to beat. The books are read superbly.
