Don't bother with this one. While the people should be honoured and their experiences are interesting, it would have been better "NOT in their own words" as they are not the best speakers - LOTS of pauses, delays, restarts and tangents that dilute the stories and would have been better edited out. Had to crank the volume to hear/understand some of them and then the VERY cheesy propaganda narrative cuts in at MUCH higher volume than the speakers, making you jump for the volume knob. Also, in some cases the people interviewing the veterans ask the most obvious questions, like "were you scared on D-day?". Didn't finish the first set of discs and cancelled delivery of the second....says it all, time better spent listening to other ones.
Interesting tales heard directly from the men who were there. Hearing the heartfelt stories told by the soldiers themselves definitely adds an emotional aspect on an already fascinating subject. Poignant, to say the least. However, because of the nature of the first-person oration, the flow is often interrupted by the occasional distracting “Um’s” and “Uh’s.” Nonetheless, this is a good listen for any World War II aficionado.
Certainly worth listening to if you are a war-history buff. I respect the project since as these heros pass away, we will lose these stories. In some respects, I did understand what they went through but I think it would have been more compelling as a narrative where these men signed off on what was written. I didn't feel fully involved which is what I had hoped for.
This is a good book if you enjoy hanging out at the local VFW and listening to war stories (which I do). You get to hear the first hand account of a soldier's experience and his thoughts and fears. You have to be patient because they do repeat themselves and lose their train of thought, but it is enjoyable.
