I have been a fan of Peter Straub for a long time and this is the first audio version for me. This abridged version did not do his writing justice. The mood and characters were good but felt a little underdeveloped. I'm hoping that's because of the abridgement and not because of his writing.
Ok, I read Lost boy, Lost girl and I still do not get this book. Getting through two discs was more than I could take. For those who have nothing else to listen to, this should keep you company on a lonely commute.
Sorry, but I just could not recommend this one. I did not read "Lost Boy Lost Girl" (or whatever the previous book was named), so maybe I haven't given this one a fair chance. I used to love Straub and S. King, etc. Maybe I have finally outgrown this type of story. I thought the writing was childish.
LOVE PETER STRAUB. GREAT BOOK, NICELY WRITTEN. WOULD RECOMMEND TO ALL
It is a good fast-paced 'ghost story', which made me wish my commute was even longer. I like the author and probably would have liked the book better unabridged. The narrator was very good, not too phony, but you could still tell the different characters apart. I liked the story line but sometimes I needed more background information. It would have been helpful to have known 'Lost Boy, lost Girl'.
I couldn't get into this book. I don't recommend it.
One of my favorite authors! I certainly recommend reading "Lost Boy, Lost Girl" first or else you may be lost! Straub is a great story teller and this one's got an inventive twist to it - a little disappointing as far as the ending goes but a good continuation to a great story just the same. Weaker in points when you might be expecting more but quick-paced and still entertaining.
"Peter Straub is the author of seventeen novels, which have been translated into more than twenty languages. He lives in New York City with his wife, Susan, director of the Read to Me program."
