Overview

People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down in his prime, who came back to win the world's most grueling test of cycling, the Tour de France. It's Not About the Bike is the story of Armstrong's journey from inauspicious beginnings through triumph, tragedy, transformation, and transcedence. Though he's a hero to millions, he never adopts a hero's pose. In his down-to earth Texas style, he tells of his childhood, early success, near-fatal cancer, recovery, survivorship, victory in the 1999 Tour de France, marriage, and first-time fatherhood. Everyone knows Lance Armstrong is a passionate and fearless competitor. It's Not About the Bike reveals what is truly heroic about the man: his depth of character and generosity of spirit.

Amazing Story

This book narrates a story of great accomplishment but I did not find it "thought provoking" (for that you may want to consider something like "autobiography of viktor frankl"). I admire Lance for what he has achieved. The book is well read and I highly recommend it.

This was my favorite book thus far. Listening to Lance speak in his own words really added to the content of the book. He is much more of a Maverick than I would have thought from briefly seeing him on TV. The book covers everything that we would want to know about his life including the depth of his cancer illness and treatment. I very much enjoyed.

A very inspiring book in some ways. I think I would have been even more impressed by the accomplishments of Lance Armstrong if I had listened to this book when it first came out. He seemed so in-love with his wife that hearing the book after he had divorced her was a bit of a downer. But I am a hopeless romantic. Being a nurse and knowing somewhat about stage 4 cancer, it really is amazing that he lived. I am glad he is doing so much to help cancer patients believe they can lick their disease. That is where his real inspiration lies for now

Not underabirdged but rewarding

This is an entertaining, revealing and, for the most part, motivational view of man I admire. Understand that it covers his life and career until after his first Tour de France win and birth of his first child. We learn a lot about th man and the forces that made him endure to be a champion - both the admirable and not so admirable parts. Just about the right length for what he has to say. Well narrated but would have been better if Lance had read it.

A book to teach you about much more than bike racing. Lance sets himself vulnerable to us so that we may be better people. Once you start listening you won't want to stop.

I really wanted to like this book. I rent autobiographies a lot because they tend to be narrated by the author, which makes them so much more interesting. Sadly, this one was not and what's worse is that the narrator mispronouced several words--actually, that was one of the more entertaining parts. There is no denying what a terrific athlete Lance Armstrong is but the story does come off a little arrogant. He bacame less and less likable as the book went on.

I didn't know what to expect when I put in the first CD, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was a great story about the human spirit and the motivation to overcome adversity against tremendous odds. Whether you like biking or not- this book is fantastic.
