A moving, yet disturbing account of an immigrant family's introduction to capitalism in its worst form. Hearing about the conditions in the meat packing plant were difficult to read, especially after reading that Sinclair was an investigative reporter who lived and worked in those plants for a period of time. His published writings had a huge impact in revolutioning the conditons in such factories across the country. This book was inspired by his experiences in the meat packing plants. There is probably more truth in this book than any of us would like to think. I enjoyed the book a great deal, enough to give it 5 stars, but I could have done without the long speeches at the end of the book. A little bit of the socialism talk would have complimented the storyline, but Sinclair sacrificed needed closure for a political statement that amounted to an extended ramble.
I liked the first 3/4 of the book. The family worked hard but made a lot of poor choices. The last 1/4 of the book is all about the "great" system of socialism. I hated that part of the book. Liberals will love this book.
A true classic of what life was like at the turn of the century. The description of the stockyards is truly revolting. I felt so sorry for the characters; they worked so hard and yet their life never seemed to get better. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the ending is a bit tedious and seemed to be one long advertisement. Once you read it, you'll see what I mean.
