I found the book to be tedious after awhile. I lost interest in it and returned it unfinished. I also did not like the way General Sherman was portrayed.
Doctorow's book has great character development and Joe Morton does an excellent job of reading/narrating. The story line is a bit thin, however. Overall it was a good experience and worth listening.
I found this book thoroughly engaging and very well written. The author did an excellent job in not just relating a plot. He subtly explores such themes as the feelings of the slaves about being free, the special plight of females (both white and black), living conditions of the soldiers, etc. I highly recommend it!
This story really drew me in, but I found the conclusion of each character's tale to be unsatisfying. In the end, I'd suggest listening to something else.
Although E.L. Doctorow's prose is beautiful to listen to, I couldn't get past Disc 6 because he kept bouncing from one new character after another and I found myself losing interest in the few characters that were consistent throughout the book. I returned it unfinished.
A wonderful and very engaging story, beautifully read. I found myself hoping for traffic jams so I wouldn't have to turn it off.
I found this book poorly written. The cumbersome language made the story sound superficial. It didn't seem like much research went into the book. The author did very little to shed light on what people experienced during that time. I gleaned very little about the actual events of Sherman's March and learned even less about actual characters involved. The whole thing seemed shallow and poorly done. I would not recommend it to others and felt disappointed.
This novel was quite gripping, and the reader was very good. The topic - Sherman's march through the South - is a vivid story, told through the eyes of a variety of characters. This being the Civil War, however, the listener should be prepared for quite a bit of violence and bloody deaths. That said, however, it's a great book.
This book, although dealing with extremely painful events, was a pleasure from the first disc to the final. I was immediately immersed in Doctorow's burlapped layers of storylines--narrated by an engaging Joe Morton. This cinematic reinvention of Sherman's March brought me closer to a visceral understanding of a time I could previously only understand from a conceptual standpoint. I highly recommend this book.
Great book. The reader make the characters come alive. The characters are authentic. This is not like any other Civil War novels that I have ever read. You see Sherman's march through different characters and therefore, different points of view.
