Overview

Translated from the French by Catherine Temerson

Married for political reasons at the age of fourteen, Marie Antoinette was naïve, impetuous, and ill equipped for the role in which history cast her. From her birth in Vienna in 1755 through her turbulent, unhappy marriage, the bloody turmoil of the French Revolution, her trial for high treason (during which she was accused of incest), and her final beheading, Marie Antoinette's life was the tragic tale of disastrous circumstances colliding.

I got this to listen to in the car while I was doing some research on Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution. It was well-written and beautifully read. I especially appreciated when the author (who is French) would explain which events in the life of this ultra-famous queen were controversial or mythologized. Marie Antoinette and the people in her family/court came alive and I couldn't wait to hear more of their stories. It's wonderful when biographies can relate facts and still bring their subjects to life in the period in which they lived. Many thanks Evelyn Lever and Lorna Raver!

Balanced and interesting

At 12 CDs, it's a bit intimidating when you first get it, but it's absolutely wonderful. It's extremely well-written and filled with so many interesting details about the time. The writer is also careful not to make a martyr or a monster out of Marie Antoinette--something that is rare when it comes to her. It's interesting that even today she still seems to cause a bit of controversy. Anyway, I loved it and I highly recommend it.
