Cada día, cientos de personas toman incalculables riesgos para cruzar la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos en busca de trabajo y mejores oportunidades de vida. Pero para un grupo de inmigrantes que cruzó la frontera ilegalmente y se subió a un trailer la noche del 13 de mayo del 2003, este sueño se tornó en tragedia.

Aquella noche, al menos 73 personas abordaron la parte de atrás de un camión que debía llevarlos de Harlingen, Texas hasta la ciudad de Houston. Pero el camión nunca llegó a su destino final. A las cuatro horas tuvo que detenerse cerca de la ciudad de Victoria, donde se abrieron las puertas del trailer para encontrar que 17 personas habí an muerto por asfixia, deshidratación, y un calor insoportable.

Cuando llegó la policía varios de los sobrevivientes ya habían desaparecido. El terror, el desconcierto y el miedo absoluto los había hecho escapar antes que nadie pudiera hacerles ninguna pregunta. Pero las investigaciones que siguieron pronto encontraron que había una mujer en el mismo centro de esta horrible tragedia: Karla Chá vez, una hondureña de 25 añ os acusada por las autoridades de organizar toda la operación.

Every day, hundreds of people take incalculable risks in order to cross the border between Mexico and the United States in search of work and better opportunities of lfe. But for a group of immigrants who crossed the border illegally while hiding in a truck on May 13th 2003, this dream turned into tragedy.

That night, at least 73 people approached the back of a truck that had to take them from Harlingen, Texas to Houston. But the truck never arrived at its final destination. After four hours it stopped near the city of Victoria, where the doors of the trailer were opened to find that 17 people had died by asphyxia, dehydration, and unbearable heat. When the police arrived, several of the survivors had already disappeared. The terror, the uneasyness and absolute fear made them escape before anyone could question them. But the investigations that followed soon found that there was a woman in the centre of this tragedy: Karit Chatime, a Honduran of 25 years accused by the authorities of organizing the operation. With the passion and meticulousness that characterizes him, the writer Jorge Ramos tells us the details of this heartrendering tragedy. At the same time she looks to include and understand how something to cruel can happen in the 21st century.
