Overview

Like many Southern California millionaires, Ralph Sampson keeps odd company. There’s the sun-worshiping holy man to whom Sampson once gave his very own mountain and the fading actress with sidelines in astrology and S&M. Now one of Sampson’s friends may have arranged his kidnapping. And as Lew Archer follows the clues from the canyon sanctuaries of the mega-rich to jazz joints where you can get beaten up between sets, The Moving Target blends sex, greed, and family hatred into an explosive crime novel.

I became a Ross MacDonald fan via an audiobook picked up at the public library. In the absence of any British mysteries, I grudgingly picked up THE UNDERGROUND MAN, read by Tom Parker, based on the comparisons to Hammett et al. on the cover. MacDonald and Parker are a magical combination. Wonderful characters, snappy dialog, and a melancholy detective, Lew Archer. Parker is the "noir" reader extraordinaire! When I heard Elliott Gould's hideous performance as Chandler's Marlowe, I despaired... if only Tom Parker would re-do all those novels!
