I am a dyslexia therapist and a certified academic language therapist. I have been in public education for over 25 years. I found Overcoming Dyslexia to be one of the best books out on dyslexia. The description above says it all. The narration is top notch. It is the best I have ever heard in a nonfiction audiobook.

Excellent Book!

Although this book is targeted toward the topic of dyslexia, it is actually an excellent resource for anyone interested in the topic of reading instruction in general. Having read extensively on the topics presented in this book (I am a school psychologist), I can attest that Dr. Shaywitz's conclusions are well-founded on research. My only complaint is that she makes it sound as if every child with "dyslexia" is exceedingly bright. Although her definition of dyslexia is accurate in the traditional sense, it misses the fact that many struggling readers may have below average intelligence, but are certainly just as deserving of excellent reading instruction. This is a minor complaint, however. If you follow the strategies identified in this book with any child learning to read, you will greatly increase his/her chances of becoming a competent reader. Highly recommended!
