Overview

The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical-he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion.

Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected. But when he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge, the fire in her golden eyes sways him to make a generous offer.

Her sorry financial circumstances-and dreams of a life of independence-convince her to accept. But St. Merryn appears to be hiding a secret or two, and things seem oddly amiss in his gloomy London home. Elenora soon discovers that this lark will be a far more dangerous adventure than she'd been led to believe. And the Earl of St. Merryn will find that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned has become a partner in his quest to catch a killer-and an outspoken belle of the ball who stirs a bothersome passion in his practical heart.

Great Summer Reading

I expected a bit more of a bodice-ripper with this book, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find this a good mystery that happened to have romance-novel overtones. The characters were a bit simply drawn - beautiful, clever, and kind but impoverished gentlewoman; brilliant, handsome, but imperious gentleman - but tolerably so, and fun to follow through their adventures. If you're looking for a light distraction that's nonetheless an engaging story, this is it.

Just not what I have come to expect from Amanda Quick

I have read many romance books and I have read several by Amanda Quick. This writing felt contrived and at times repetitious. The story was fair, but I have come to expect much more from this author. By the time the story was over, I was sitting in my car wondering why I had even bothered to listen to the whole thing. The voice acting from the reader also left a lot to be desired. He just did not add anything to the story and at times, his voice just made me tune him out completely.

I thought that this was a really good book. This was the first book I had listened to by this author but I would not hesitate to listen to another one. It is easy to listen to and the narrator does a nice job. The book also keeps the listener entertained with a good characters and a great mystery.

This is not the kind of book I usually read, but I found it quite enjoyable. The characters seem real, the plot plausible and with a nice sense of humor now again, the story plays to the end. The reader compliments the book. I'm looking for another by the same author.

At first this book seemed too dry, and boring. But as I listened on, I got completely drawn in by the story and characters. Don't give up on this one. It's worth the listen!

The first few minutes of the prologue was ok, but after the book started, it keep me listening! Normally I would turn off the car and do my errands but this book kept me listening... even bringing a disc in the house! I am a 1 book renter and this got me so wrapped up I switched over to a 2 book renter so I could get the 2nd part faster. Very entertaining and the narrator does a good job with various characters. Sure its not accurate to the time era, but its a perfect form of entertaiment!
