I was very disappointed in this book. The main character was whiny. The author made so many allusions forward that it was obvious who he would turn out to be - no suspense there. Several threads of the story were abruptly dropped - the author started to develop them and then they were simply forgotten. Other threads were frustratingly underdeveloped - only scant information hinting at a deeper story but then abandoned. I don't plan to bother with the sequel.
This is a great book in a great series, but the reader for this format leaves something to be desired. He uses a strange "foreign" voice (a cross between French and Russian) with lots of rolled r's, and odd inflections and stresses, that is quite off-putting. You get used to it after a while, I guess, but once you get used to it you have to go back and listen again to the first chapters to realize what you missed.
The start was slow and difficult to get into, but once on to second disc it was better and I ended up enjoying the story. my tip stick with it.
I really liked this book. I'll admit it starts off a bit slow and has some lulls throughout the book but the story is intriguing and captures the reader fairly quickly. I did find it somewhat easy to guess who the main characters were pretty early on in the story despite the fact that the author doesn't truly reveal this information until the latter half of the book. But overall I enjoyed listening to this audio book. I look forward to book 2, Queen of Sorcery.
The book starts out slowly. The author presents a long discussion on how the world came to be, what gods did what, etc., and what peoples they adopted. The book centers around a relic of great power and attempts by other gods and their followers to keep it out of the hands of the most self-centered and evil of the gods. At about CD3 the story gets better as the main characters (who are not gods) have been brought into the story as has indications of their back stories.
I think it was great. The man reading it does a great job. He makes the characters come to life.
This is a great start to a new seris. I found the charactors intersting and lively. Great for the car and long trips. I liked it enough to have the rest of the series but on my reading list.
I have completed the entire Belgariad series, which began with Pawn of Prophecy. It is an excellent series and I enjoyed the reader. Often times, action is slow and character development encompasses most of this first book, but stick it out because I promise you will be hooked. I guess the best sign of how good the series was is that I am sad that they have completed their journey. I plan to begin listening to the Malloreon soon and am hopeful that the characters continue where they left off.
