Jack Aubrey arrives home to find England at peace following the Treaty of Amiens. He begins to live the life of a gentleman, but is soon reduced to a pauper. He flees to France to seek refuge, but finds himself a hunted fugitive as Napoleon has ordered the internment of all Englishmen.
