Overview

We live in digital time. Our pace is rushed, rapid-fire, and relentless. Facing crushing workloads, we try to cram as much as possible into every day. We're wired up, but we're melting down. Time management is no longer a viable solution. As bestselling authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz demonstrate in this groundbreaking book, managing energy, not time, is the key to enduring high performance as well as to health, happiness, and life balance.

The number of hours in a day is fixed, but the quantity and quality of energy available to us is not. This fundamental insight has the power to revolutionize the way you live your life. "The Power of Full Engagement" is a highly practical, scientifically based approach to managing your energy more skillfully both on and off the job.

At the heart of the program is the Corporate Athlete(R) Training System. It is grounded in twenty-five years of work with some of the world's greatest athletes to help them perform more effectively under brutal competitive pressures. Clients have included Jim Courier, Monica Seles, and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in tennis; Mark O'Meara and Ernie Els in golf; Eric Lindros and Mike Richter in hockey; Nick Anderson and Grant Hill in basketball; and gold medalist Dan Jansen in speed skating.

During the past decade, dozens of Fortune 500 companies have paid thousands of dollars to learn the Corporate Athlete training system. So have FBI swat teams, critical care physicians and nurses, salesmen, and stay-at-home moms. "The Power of Full Engagement" lays out the key training principles and provides a powerful, step-by-step program that will help you to:

• Mobilize four key sources of energy
•Balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal
• Expand capacity in the same systematic way that elite athletes do
• Create highly specific, positive energy management rituals

Above all, this book provides a life-changing road map to becoming more fully engaged on and off the job, meaning physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused, and spiritually aligned.

Hits Close To Home

When I received this book, I forgot why I even picked and by the title was tempted to return it without listening to it. But, I started listening to it on my commute. It started to go into sources of energy and my eyes begin to roll and I was thinking that I had picked up so new age crap. However, as the author begin to go into the case studies, I begin to think, whoa, this is hitting close to home and I started to listen more intently. The nuggets that I got out of this was that less is more and that to create change, you have to create rituals. Despite the shakey start, this is a good read.

Very good analogies between athletes and corporate athletes. Basics that we all know but need to be reminded of.

I found much of the content of this book to be rather average and already understood. There are, however, a number of insightful passages. I found the sections that addressed the power of reptition to be interesting, as were those regarding emotional power and the mutual entailment of the virtues. Overall it is worth your time.

Excellent reminder about managing your energy

This book is great for a complete view of managing your energy - and paying attention to your physical, mental and emotional state. The facts presented about over-work and importance of sleep are very compelling, and "sample" clients profiled all were relatable. The authors do a good job of adapting their advice for professional athletes to the needs of everyday people (corporate managers, busy parents, students, etc.).

It was okay -- I didn't learn anything new from this book, but someone just beginning to try to make sense of things it may be someplace to start.

A novel and, for me, very effective approach. Managing your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual energy as an athlete does is much more effective than traditional time management. It makes obvious sense, but it is very counter-intuitive in the business workplace. This book shows real world examples of how it applies. Very well done and effective for me.

Feeling Burned Out and Overwhelmed --- Read this book

Excellent book that helps you frame work/life in a new way. It's about managing your energy and attention (full engagement) rather than running 200mph all day every day (and thinking you can be fully engaged and effective at that pace). If you are in a place where you are feeling burned out in your job, this is a must read. Your whole paradigm on what it takes to be productive and successful will change. You will be able to reflect on what's most important to you in life, and be inspired to change your lifestyle to be aligned with your values and priorities. It's possible to achieve work/life and be successful at work. This book tells you how. This one is probably good to ready a few times a year to keep you on track with your action plan.

Having read a lot of self-help books, this book really had a new way at looking at things. I listened to it several times over to catch all the thought provoking ideas and now am more mindful of how I choose to spend my energy and how to charge back up before it gets too low.
