Overview

The Saga of the Skolian Empire is Catherine Asaro's trademark series. It chronicles the lives of the members of the ruling family of the Empire in the distant interstellar future, weaving a fine blend of action, romance, and hard science fiction.

The Quantum Rose is the story of Kamoj Argali, the young ruler of an impoverished province on a backward planet. To keep her people from starving, she has agreed to marry Jax Ironbridge, ruler of the prosperous neighboring province. But before they can be wed, Kamoj is forced into marriage with a mysterious stranger from a distant planet, throwing her world into utter chaos.

Slow, dull, unrealistic

It was a real struggle to stick with it through to the end. The main plot of what were basically medieval characters thrust into a very high tech civilization never worked for me. They had very little sense of wonder and with no effort some of them seemed able to twist the legal system to their advantage. And where was the romance? I saw very little convincing growth of the romantic relationship over the course of the story. And then there is the big ending where they have a 60's style love-in and the big bad military just backs down - how unrealistic was that? I give it 2 stars since I actual made it through the whole thing.

Entertaining read

I enjoyed the book, it provided romance and SF in equal measure. I liked the characters especially the fact that the good guy had his issues and the bad guy had his reasons. Made it a bit less black and white and the moral dilemma of the female heroine easier to understand. Still liked Catch the Lightning better, but can't wait for the other books about the Skolian Empire to be available as an audiobook. The narrator was excellent, did both male and female voices were great.

Wow! I really enjoyed this story. I loved Kamoj. I cared what happened to her and the story was fast paced and entertaining. I did think that she could do better than her "Ruby Prince" but she was happy so I guess it was ok. I also would have liked to have a more fitting, read deadly, ending for Jax Ironbridge.
