Overview

The first volume of this engaging survey covers Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, and Rousseau. As well as offering historical context and a cogent explanation for each school of thought, Durant provides biographical information, a gentle reminder that philosophers are people as well as thinkers.

This is an awesome review of the great thinkers and should be required reading at all universities. Durant clearly gives not only a digest of thought, but a biographical sketch as well, which is useful in understanding where the thinker has come from. This is a classic piece of work and highly recommended.

I found this audio to be too combersome to listen to. I did not like the format of the book. I wanted to learn about the different philosophies of famous people and when they lived and how they influenced culture. This book did that sorta, but in a very unorganized way. I think the information is in the book but was not clearly articulated. I will try to find a better book to explain philosophy and it's history

A let down when compared with his other works. Still interesting and should be of value to those who wants synopsis of great philosophers of all times.
