Fourteen-year-old Trixie Stone has been a ghost for 14 days, seven hours, and 36 minutes, not that she is officially counting. With a story that transports readers from smalltown New England to the wilds of the Alaskan bush, Picoult probes the unbreakable bond between parent and child and the dangerous repercussions of trying to play God.

Worth a listen

The Tenth Circle was a good listen. I am a critical reader/listener. So, I am always interested in the reliability of the plot lines and the credibility of the characters. I find that I get overly critical when the story isn't enough to keep my mind from wandering. This was the case here. There were a lot of twists and turns. Almost too many. The story seemed to go on longer than necessary and a few of the characters were ill defined in relationship to the overall story line. But, there was sufficient drama, discord and confusion to get a Lifetime movie made. So, this is worth a listen, but don't get too excited.

Another Great Book from Picoult

I was introduced to Jodi Picoult when I rented "My Sister's Keeper". Since then I have been on an enjoyable journey of discovering her other novels. "The Tenth Circle" is not her strongest, but the story has all of the classic Picoult elements. Real life events that challenge real life characters to examine long held beliefs and values. At the same time, it leaves the listener thinking about their own families, their own values, and consideration of their own actions if faced with the same circumstances. I can't wait for the next book to arrive.

I love Jodi Picoult. So this is somewhat bias. This book flows well. You get into their family life quickly. I was intrigued to learn about Alaska and the different customs. It truly depicted how our children drift away from us and us from them. Although this is an extreme case. It is enjoyable keeps your interest.

As with all of Jodi Picoult's books, this book addresses a current and timely issue - date rape - and how it affects the girl, the accused, her family and friends, his family and friends, and the community at large. There are some disturbing images in this book - especially for those of us who would like to believe that 14 year olds are still very much naive about matters of sex and love. This book explores the ties between daughter and parent, wife and husband, and the impact of the society in which they exist.

Yet another outstanding book by Jodi Picoult. So true to life were the characters in this book, but without being obvious. I liked the ending as well.....not what I expected but a great way to wind up an emotional book.

Tenth Circle

THE TENTH CIRCLE tells the story of Daniel Stone, a successful graphic artist grappling with the fact that his beloved daughter, Trixie, is becoming a teenager. Daniel grew up as the only white boy in an Alaskan Inuit village, a troubled childhood that led to a rebellious and very angry adolescence that he fought hard to escape. Reinventing himself years later as a work-at-home dad devoted to his only daughter, he's trying to improve a troubled marriage to his wife Laura, a Classics scholar, and is working on a graphic novel where his hero --- a father --- travels through Dante's Inferno to save his daughter, quite literally, from Hell. When Trixie comes home one night and tells her father that she was date raped at a party, the life he's created for himself slowly begins to come apart at the seams. It really makes you think of what one would do if it was your child that this happened to. I really enjoyed this book as I enjoy all of Jodi Picoult's books.

Great storytelling

The title of the book and the summary made me think that this was a fantasy story. It's not. Though the book is not at all what I expected, it is an excellent read. I highly recommend it.

Very well-written--excellent description of detail. The characters end up doing what you wish would happen in real life. If you like classical literature, you'll like this one!

Picoult studied creative writing with Mary Morris at Princeton, and had two short stories published in Seventeen magazine while still a student. Realism - and a profound desire to be able to pay the rent - led Picoult to a series of different jobs following her graduation: as a technical writer for a Wall Street brokerage firm, as a copywriter at an ad agency, as an editor at a textbook publisher, and as an 8th grade English teacher - before entering Harvard to pursue a master's in education. She married Tim Van Leer, whom she had known at Princeton, and it was while she was pregnant with her first child that she wrote her first novel, Songs of the Humpback Whale.

In 2003 she was awarded the New England Bookseller Award for Fiction. She has also been the recipient an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association, sponsored by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust and Booklist, one of ten books written for adults that have special appeal for young adults; the Book Browse Diamond Award for novel of the year; a lifetime achievement award for mainstream fiction from the Romance Writers of America; Cosmopolitan magazine’s ‘Fearless Fiction’ Award 2007; Waterstone’s Author of the Year in the UK, and a Vermont Green Mountain Book Award. Most recently, she wrote five issues of the Wonder Woman comic book series for DC Comics. Her books are translated into thirty four languages in thirty five countries. Two – The Pact and Plain Truth – were made into television movies; a third, The Tenth Circle, will air on Lifetime this summer. My Sister’s Keeper is currently in development at New Line Cinema, with Nick Cassavetes directing and Cameron Diaz starring.

She and Tim and their three children live in Hanover, New Hampshire with two Springer spaniels, two donkeys, two geese, three ducks, six chickens, and the occasional Holstein.
