Overview

“ Hurston's prose is newly invigorated by Dee's reading . . . this tape succeeds in its rich descriptions and freshness of dialogue, delivering in terms that are alternately funny and moving.” 'Publishers WeeklyIn this rediscovered classic, first published in 1937, you will meet the unforgettable Janie Crawford. Fair and long-legged, independent and articulate, Janie sets out to be her own person . . . no mean feat for a woman in the 30's, and a black woman at that. Zora Neale Hurston's most highl acclaimed novel traces Janie's quest for identity, through three marriages, on a journey back to her roots. Here is one black woman whose life is not defined by regret, fear, or foolish romantic dreams. As Janie says, “ two things everybody's got tuh do fuh theyselves. They got tuh go tuh God, and they got tuh find out about livin' fuh theyselves.”

I loved the narrator. I don't know where the author got the title, but all the same, it was an interesting read.

The actress who reads this story is riveting. Not to take anything away from the story itself, but I highly recommend it on the strength of the narration alone.

Not my cup of tea-cake

First off, I generally do not read love stories. I had heard so many good things about the book and decided to find out for myself. The high expectations and the genre itself probably caused my mild disappointment. However, I do recommend the book for those more romantic and poetic than I. I liked this better than most "chic lit". The narrator was very good.

I found this selection absolutely wonderful. I had tried to read this selection a time or two, but found it difficult to read the dialects the book was written in. The recording made the book come to life. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I HAVE LISTENED TO SOME 50 BOOKS OVER THE LAST YEAR AND THIS ONE WAS THE FIRST I WANTED TO REVIEW. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE BOOK YOU ARE CAPTURED BY THE NARRATORS( RUBY DEE) VOICE, INFLECTION AND CADENCE. THE STORY IS A TREASURE FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A DEEP LOVE FOR TRUE LITERATURE AND A LOVE FOR WORDS. THIS ONE I WOULD BUY IN A HEART BEAT JUST TO LISTEN AGAIN. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

The authenticity of the dialogue is one of the most wonderful things about this book and nobody could have brought it to life better than Ruby Dee. Don't miss this one.
