Overview

In his classic WWII memoir, Audie Murphy depicts the harrowing events of the war, relating the fear, courage, and death that followed the men he knew into battle. In the two years that he fought in Italy, France, and Germany, he killed at least 240 Germans, single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and became the most decorated soldier in American history.

I've seen the movie so I was a little hesitant to give this title a try. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The dialog, whether it's real or not, is hillarious at times. The descriptions of combat are great. I've found most personal account books are heavy on training and liberty experiences and short on combat. Not this one. He goes into even the most routine experiences. You can tell he wanted people to know how terrible an experience it was and held little back - it seems.

I was looking for a historic record of Murphy's exploits. What I got was a transcript of inane banter between privates laying around the forest. Just go watch the movie.
