Since I had a long commute, the slowness of the story was okay. Those that like WW II or old 40's detective stories may enjoy it. Also, the references to racing could have played more to the story.
Surely the abridgement contributed to the confusion and desperation of the cobbled together ending, but even Dunning devotees are saying the book is in need of some serious editing. Don't invest the time in this one. You will be angry that there is so little substance to be unveiled after working so hard to keep up with who's who and who you're supposed to care about.
