Getting help when you really need it
Monday, July 3rd, 2006I just returned from a week of hiking through the Grand Canyon, followed by a couple of days in Las Vegas. I listened to a couple of audiobooks on the flights there and back, but not during the rest of the vacation. It occurred to me though that it would be great to have audiobooks that give you advice when you really need it.
I was losing a mild amount of money at a poker table at the Bellagio hotel, and I thought, “I used to be pretty good at this, and now all I do is smile and throw chips at the other players.” I tried to read Card Player magazine while I was sitting at the table, but I kept missing my turn and annoying everyone else. What I needed was an ongoing audiobook that gave me advice, encouragement, and reminders – along with some interesting stories. There’s so much material in the world of poker, that I have to believe this would be incredibly popular.
And there would be lots of other activities/applications. While I was hiking, I had to at one point cross a ridge about 3 feet wide, with a 1,000 ft vertical drop on either side. Perhaps a recording of helpful hiking advice, like “don’t look down” and “what are you, crazy?”.
