Audio Books on Tape (or not)

Funny thing about advertising audiobooks in general. The term ‘Books on Tape’ and the terms ‘Books on CD’ and ‘Audio Books’ are NOT interchangeable. We discovered early on that some people who’ve listened to Books on Tape will say that they’ve never listened to an audiobook.

In a similar vein, a recent survey we did made it clear that many people didn’t realize the iPod was an MP3 player. We asked if they had an MP3 player, then if they had an iPod… and more people had iPods than people who had MP3 players.

It raises an interesting advertising issue for us. We only rent audio books on CD. But our best customers find us while looking for ‘books on tape’. Yet I feel like I’m misleading people anytime we run an ad campaign that says we do books on tape, despite the fact that we do sell books that are literally on tape. I guess maybe all marketers really are liars, but it’s not our fault.

How about something like “The _new_ books on tape”? Accurate, but it also has the right keywords…

Definitely worth trying. Maybe we can coin a new phrase!
