Its Crunch Time

Monday, March 31st, 2008

With the sub-prime mortgage implosion in the news, as well as the ominous whispers of recession circuling around the US, a lot of Simply Audiobooks customers are making a run on the personal finance books.

If you’re new to the wonderful world of personal finance (either you’ve just finished school or you haven’t a clue how to make your money work for you), check out Personal Finance For Dummies. No, it doesn’t mean you’re a dummy – it means you’re serious about making the most of your cash.

One BIG Ice Cube

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Imagine an ice cube that 7 times bigger than the island of Manhattan. Now imagine dropping it half a mile into the ocean. It would be a big splash.

That’s exactly what has recently happened down in Antarctica, where part of the Wilkins ice shelf has broken off and crashed into the ocean. Scientists are warning that this is a dramatic example of the impact of global warming, just as Al Gore warned in his 1992 book Earth In The Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit.

With Earth Day coming up this Saturday, what a better time to pick up an audio book on this important issue and find out how you can do your part to minimize your “ecological footprint”.

Every Bunny Need Somebunny to Love

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Happy Easter! This weekend is a heavy travel time for a lot of folks - the main culprit is long car rides to the in-laws for Easter dinner.

If you have little kids in the car, that drive can seem even longer. What better time to pick up Peter Rabbit and Other Stories by Beatrix Potter? These are classic and fun stories about the trials and tribulations of small rodents living in a vegetable patch – perfect for kids between the ages of 2 and 10.

The Simply Audiobooks Download is available for only $8.50 this weekend – that’s just $4.25 per hour for peace and quiet!

Happy Spring!

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Although it may not feel like it (depending on where you are in North America) Spring officially arrived this morning. And with a long Easter weekend stretching out in front of some people, this might be the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and scrub out that winter dirt.

If you need a little advice on the best ways to clean (or you just want an excuse to postpone the cleaning for a couple of hours!), check out the Queen of Clean books for great tips.

A Queen for All Seasons has Spring-specific cleaning tips, or you can try the more general Talking Dirty With The Queen of Clean. If you were formerly unaware that you can clean rust with a half an onion, or that you can polish your fine wood furniture with tea, this is the book for you!

Death of a Modern Nostradamus

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, passed away yesterday. Most people know of the movie, although I’m not sure that everyone is aware of the original book, published in 1968.

Over the years, many readers have marvelled at how predictive it was for modern technology. Although Clarke was overly optimistic about how far humans would come with space exploration at that time, its still a great read.

Eliot Spitzer And Other Famous Philanderers

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Sadly, Eliot Spitzer does not have an audio book that I can offer for you, however we fortunately do not lack audio books by famous philanderers or about philandering.

One can’t help pointing out My Life by Bill Clinton as the most popular book by a politician caught in a sex scandal. And, of course, there are always the shady rumours surrounding the author of Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy, or the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson.

Or perhaps we should look at this from the perspective of Silda, Spitzer’s poor wife. To poor Mrs. Spitzer we can offer The Beginner’s Guide to Forgiveness, Marriage on the Rocks, or Freedom From Your Past - all marriage-saving books.

Or perhaps she should just take the hint that He’s Just Not That Into You.

While she’ll never win an Oscar…

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Madonna has at least been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was a little surprised that there was any controversy over this decision; after all, Michael Jackson was just nominated a few years ago. It makes sense that the Queen of Pop should be inducted with the King of Pop, too.

Given her celebrity, its not surprising that there are sooooo many biographies on Madonna. Probably the most famous (and highest rated by our Simply Audiobooks subscribers) is Andrew Morton’s Madonna.

If you find that’s just not enough for you, you might always want to check out The Complete Madonna and Absolute Madonna, available to Rent at http://www.simplyaudiobooks.com.

And now up for the New York Yankees….

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

… Billy Crystal!

Yes, MLB has confirmed that our favorite Oscar host and perennial Yankees fan, Billy Crystal, has been signed to a special 1-day contract with the New York Yankees to play in Thursdays game vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. No word yet on what position the 59-year old comedian will play, but somehow I don’t think he’ll be the DH.

It might be a little too late for 75-year-old Larry King, New York’s other biggest fan, unless they’re willing to take on the world’s oldest bat boy. King talks about his intense passion for baseball in the (appropriately named) book Why I Love Baseball, a must read for anyone who loves the nostalgia of the sport.

No Seinfeld for you!

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Sorry folks – last week’s rumour that Jerry Seinfield was in the process of developing a new sitcom for NBC was summarily dismissed by the man himself this weekend. The idea was a show along the lines of Curb Your Enthusiasm with Seinfeld playing himself.

If you’re a Seinfeld fan, though, check out his stand up routine book I’m Telling You For The Last Time. It falls into the “Oldy But Goody” category, in that its already 10 years old, but can still get you chuckling. This Grammy Nominated production is highly rated by Simply Audiobooks subscribers, with an average of 4 stars.

Audio Book To Movie Adaptation: The Other Boleyn Girl

Friday, March 7th, 2008

If you’re a fan of seductive novels, or historical romances, OR you’re a fan of Scarlett Johannson, or Natalie Portman or Eric Bana or sweeping dramas, you’re probably already aware of The Other Boleyn Girl.

The book, by Phillipa Gregory, was released late last year and was already gaining great traction with book lovers, before the movie starring that afore-mentioned stars was released a week ago.

Although the movie is been criticized for being more bodice-ripper than serious drama, the audio book is quickly climbing our Top Rentals list. You can check it out at www.simplyaudiobooks.com for Rent or Download!
