How easy is that?

Its Not Old. Its “Vintage”!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

All the hype surrounding this summer’s blockbusters could leave you with the feeling of deja vu. Indiana Jones, The Incredible Hulk, Batman, and The Sex And The City Movie (which I am so going to see immediately after work on Friday!) are built around characters and story lines that we’re already pretty familiar with.

Yet it’s these old (read: vintage) characters that studios are counting on to heard people into theatres across the country… and it’s working. So why not reconnect with some literary classics?

As much as I love Sex And The City, Big ain’t got nothin’ on Mr. Darcy!

Great Reviews!

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Simply Audiobooks readers are passionate about their audio books and the majority of them choose to submit reviews, giving other readers the heads up as to the quality (or lack thereof) of books in our library. Cheers to all the reviewers who take the time to tell us what they think!

One of the best reviews I’ve read this month is for Lies My Teacher Told Me

“I found this book very entertaining and look forward to reading others by Mr.Loewen. Mr. Loewen makes the case in this book that history taught with all its failures and with reality can do more to illuminate the present for students than if it is sanitized and all short comings of American heroes removed from students view.

Mr.Loewen goes into great depth with about ten areas of study in which public schools fail to make history relevant for students. There are many examples of failures of the American experiment from systematic destruction of native Americans to slavery to the internment of Japanese citizens during World War II, yet it is Mr.Lowen’s point that these areas must be discussed and studied in a balanced fashion to better understand our country and how we might be better as a nation, than to ignore them and suffer repeating history.

I for one find the failing sides of American heroes every bit as intriging as their successes. Well worth the time to read this one. – Ward Kelly”

Raising Your Heartrate

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Once you’ve maxed out your playlist and you’re looking for a new way to fight treadmill boredom, maybe its time to turn to audio books. Thrillers are a great way to boost your target heart rate into a zone where you’re maximizing your workout, and entertaining the most important muscle in your body – your brain!

Simply Audiobooks readers have picked the following titles in particular as great reads:

- Bad Luck and Trouble by Lee Child: One of his recent books, this one focuses on his famous protagonist Jack Reacher as he strives to unravel conspiracies that threaten his friends.

- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas: Alright, I realize this is a classic, but it still holds up well in the current spectrum of thrillers. Obsessive love, fierce sword fighting and cold revenge; you can’t get much better than that!

- Digital Fortress by Dan Brown: The man famous for bringing us The DaVinci Code released this book 2 years earlier and some people think its even better than his subsequent works! There’s definitely more of a techy bend than a mystical one in this book, but still has lots of the suspense that made his other books bestsellers.

Long Weekend Best Sellers

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Got a long drive before you this long weekend? Or are you going to spend your days puttering around the house and gardening? In either case, what a perfect time to pick up a new best seller!

Top NonFiction: Barbara Walter’s long-anticipated book Audition is out and making noise. Available for Download or Rent from just $15!

Top Fiction: Elizabeth George’s Careless in Red has been out for a couple of weeks now and is getting great reviews as an intense thriller. A good book to make you shiver on a warm Memorial Day weekend.

If you like this movie, check out this book!

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Memorial Day Weekend is the first summer blockbuster weekend for the movies, and you’ve got lots of great flicks to choose from. If you’re going to avoid the crowds and curl up and home with a good book, let Simply Audiobooks help you find the perfect literary blockbuster.

If you like Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia, check out any of the books by Madeline L’Engle - fantasty/reality crossover novels with subtle Christian messages, using kids as the protagonists. My personal favorite is A Wind In The Door. Dragons in the garden, wot?

If you like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, check out the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Even if you’ve never picked up a Patterson novel before, you’ll enjoy the action, suspense, and humour of this series.

If you like Sex and the City: The Movie, check out the Shopaholic series by Sophia Kinsella. The heroine Becky Bloomwood may be broke, but she looks fabulous doing it!

Let The Summer Blockbuster Season Begin!

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

I’m absurdly excited about the new Chronicles of Narnia movie being released today. I’ve been a fan of the Narnia Series since I was a wee kid, and I’m tickled that Disney is finally making movies of my favorite books. The movie coming out today is Prince Caspian, based on Book # 4 in the series.

If you’re one of those people who like to read the book before they watch the movie, you can Rent or Download just that title at SimplyAudiobooks.com.

I recommend listening to the whole series, though, and (like Harry Potter) there are new “Adult” versions of the audio books that stand nicely beside your grown-up audio books. You can rent the Narnia Adult Box Set starting from just $17.98 for the month.

If, like me, you might want to enjoy it over and over again, for a limited time only, our affiliate www.BuyAudiobook.com is offering the series at 25% off! Check it out here.

Secret to Being Happy is… Being Old?

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

According to a new story by CNN, the secret to being happy is aging. Some studies suggest that older folks are likelier to be happy because they have lower expectations in life; essentially they’ve learned to be happy with what they’ve got.

If you’d like to make the most of your “golden years” check out our series of audio books on healthy aging.

The first one is by the same author as yesterday, Andrew Weil, called Healthy Aging. This book focuses not just on keeping yourself physically healthy, but also mentally healthy – something that becomes more important as you get older.

Speaking of – if you’re concerned about getting to your elderly years but not being with it enough to enjoy them, try The Memory Cure, a rigorous course of exercises designed to keep your neural connections in tip top form and stave off alzheimers.

Fat Free Audiobooks

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Ugh, Mondays. When the fun-loving and fast-living weekend comes to a screeching halt with the sound of your alarm clock, its tempting to pull the covers over your eyes and say “Wake me when its Friday!”

Why not approach today as the day you start living a healthier life? Audio books on healthy eating are a great start – its like having a good angel whispering in your ear while you’re eyeing that box of office donuts beside the coffee maker.

You can’t get much simpler than The Beginners Guide To Health Eating. This quickie book is just over an hour long, and written by an American MD.

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy is another simply titled book, but with a slightly different message. This book focuses on debunking food myths using clear, straightforward nutritional science.

You: On a Diet is the latest in a series of the You books that gets great reviews by Simply Audiobooks subscribers. Its kind of like a behind-the-scenes look at how your body runs; and how you can improve that system by eating correctly.

Einstein. Stephen Hawking. Nima Arkani-Hamed?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

CNN has a great little story today about Nima Arkani-Hamed – a youngish man who is rattling the scientific world with new and innovative ideas on particle physics.

If (like me) you’re still having trouble wrapping your mind around old ideas on particle physics, here’s some reading material to bring you up to (light) speed.

If you’re looking for a quick introduction to Einstein, Walter Isaacson’s book is probably a good place to start. Then, if you think you’re up to it, you can launch into Relativity (Listen to Genius) by the man himself. Warning: this is not for the weak of heart (or cerebrum!).

Stephen Hawking offers two flavors of his thoughts on space and time: the robust A Brief History of Time and the “lite” version A Briefer History of Time. I’ll admit, I took the shorter version, but it was a still a mind-stretching read.
