Dark Challenge

Since my discovery of
this *amazing* Ricky Martin cover, I have been on the lookout for another book that shared similar qualities of awesomeness. Well brace yourself Ladies and Gentlemen, I’ve found it. In fact, dare I say it, this one may even be better.

Most people will tell you that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. But quite frankly, they lie. This book is everything you’d think it would be, and more! That fabulous mullet the model is rockin’ means he’s “wild” – but not too wild, as if there’s a possibility that the right woman can tame him… which it totally says in the description.

I really wish this cover was clearer, cause I believe that white-ish figure in the background to be Desari aka. “The woman who dared to defy him with mysterious, unparalleled feminine powers.”

In fact, I think I may just listen to this book to find out where I can get me some of those.

Listen to an audio book written by a KNIGHT! (Chain mail, great swords and half helms not included).

British author Terry Pratchett, recently knighted, and widely regarded as one of the most significant contemporary English-language satirists,  is up for an Audie Award for Children’s titles for his audio book Nation.

Watch a video of Pratchett discussing Nation and then pick up the audio book here.

This is your brain. This is your brain on audio books.

We love audio books, for obvious reasons. And hope you do too. In fact, many customers write to us saying they’re ‘addicted’ to listening to audio books in their car. We always thought it was an over exaggeration (yet sweet nonetheless) for their love for audio books and our service. But having found a recent article in the Korea Times about ‘audible drugs’ we’re not so sure. Maybe we should start up ‘ABA’ or Audio Books Annonymous for these self-proclaimed addicts?

Allegedly ‘audio drugs’ have similar effects to the illegal variety, however the company that manufactures these i-doses insists they are safe. You can check out samples at: http://www.i-doser.com/?gclid=CJHBsfy-9ZgCFQ0hDQodQEQV0g

You’ll need to click on ‘Listen to sample CD and MP3 Audio’ at the bottom of the page. It appears that like most drugs, the first dose is free… how cute.

Still, for me nothing compares to the high of listening to a great story. Browse books to find the trip you’re looking for.

Ask An Author

Carl Hiaasen has been quoted calling Christopher Moore “A very sick man, in the very best sense of the word.”

And, given that part of the synopsis on Moore’s site for his best-seller You Suck reads “So if you’re looking for San Francisco scenery, hot vampire sex (similar to hot monkey sex, but hotter), giant shaven cats, the Cheddar Princess of Fond du Lac, and the Fighting Beatniks of Allen Ginsberg High School — four words: YOU SUCK. It doesn’t,”  I would say Hiasson has hit the nail on the head.  Hot vampire sex and shaved cats sounds pretty messed up, yet equally awesome.

And, starting tomorrow, you can ask Christopher Moore a question through Globe Books. Better make it a good one.

2009 Audie Awards – Featured Nominees

Change of Heart is best-selling author Jodi Picoult‘s 15th novel and is up for an Audie in the Fiction category. The hardcover version debuted at #1 on the NY Times bestseller list when it came out in March last year.

I’ve read a few of Picoult’s novels, and have enjoyed all of them. This one doesn’t sound like it will disappoint either:

“It’s about a death row inmate, Shay Bourne, an uneducated, marginal man who’s been convicted of a double homicide, who decides that to redeem himself, he must donate his heart post-execution to the sister of his victim – a little girl who needs a heart transplant.”

But, serious matters aside (it is Friday, afterall), perusing Picoult’s site earlier, I found a few things that made me fall in love with her a little. 1) She has 2 donkeys.  2) She has worn the letters off of two consecutive computer keyboards. 3) She listens to Aimee Mann and Wilco. 4) She laughs out loud at Bill Bryson‘s books.  5) The first book she ever read and loved was Where The Wild Things Are. 6) In 2007, she wrote 5 issues of the Wonder Woman comic.

So Jodi, for these 6 reasons, and of course, your writing, I wish you the best at The Audies in May. Me and your donkeys are rooting for you.

And the winner is…?

I’ve been seeing all the commercials on television for the Oscars this Sunday night, but I’m still undecided on whether I’ll actually be watching. I mean, I always try to catch the red carpet pre-show just to see all the gowns and stuff, but I haven’t seen many of the nominated movies this year – actually, I haven’t been to the movies much at all recently – which makes it harder to enjoy the show.

I do however really really really hope that Kate Winslet will finally be able to take home an Oscar. I think she’s a great actress and seems really funny and more down-to-earth than most of the celebrities today. I secretly hope we’ll meet sometime and drink margaritas as she tells me hilarious stories about Leonardo DiCaprio and how he hates when any of his food touches, or something equally neurotic.

If you want to watch the Oscars, but like me haven’t been able to get to the movies, there’s still time! We’ve got The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and The Reader, three of the five movies nominated for ‘Best Picture,’ as audio books.

So drive extra slow in to work the next few days, take a little bit longer at the gym, and you’ll have ‘seen’ all the movies in time to weigh in on your office Oscar pool.

2009 Audie Awards – Featured Nominees

The idea for The Lace Reader came to first-time author Brunonia Barry in a dream. “I had a dream that I saw a future event in a piece of lace,” Barry says, “and it came true the next day.”

With the encouragement and help of her husband, Gary Ward, Barry set out to self-publish supernatural thriller. “We were emboldened by our ignorance. We knew just enough to get going, but not enough to stop us.”

That little self-published novel was then picked up by a big publishing house and has since become a New York Times best-seller, and now the audio book has been nominated for an Audie award in the Fiction category, as well as Best Female Solo Narration for Alyssa Bresnahan.

Download Barry’s Audie-nominated audio book The Lace Reader, and stay tuned for more featured Audie nominees.

Happy 200th Birthday!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today is a very special day – if today is your birthday, you share it with both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin. Good old Abe and Chuck would be 200 years old today if they were alive.

Earlier today, President Barack Obama and congress paid tribute to the President Lincoln, with Obama noting that “in so many ways [Lincoln] made my own story possible.”

If you’re in Washington, an exhibit devoted to Lincoln at the Library of Congress features historical artifacts like, an original “wanted” poster with complete with a photo of John Wilkes Booth and large black letters reads: “$100,000 Reward. The murderer is still at large.”

You should also check out Darwin Day events in your area. Celebrations for Darwin Day are diverse. According to Wikipedia the day can be marked by serving ‘primordial soup‘ at dinner parties, protests with school boards and other governmental bodies, and distribution of information by people in ape costumes… sounds like a regular day at Simply Audiobooks!

Save The Words

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Did you know: hundreds of hard working words that once enjoyed a meaningful life full of sentences, paragraphs and conversations get dropped from the English language each year?!

When was the last time you said, “I my succisive moments, I love listening to audio books”?

That’s what I thought. But isn’t it great listening to audio books in your spare time?

One website is on a word saving mission – www.savethewords.org allows you to adopt your very own dying word. It even offers advice on how to ‘get the word out’ so to speak, because as the website says, “each time you use an abandoned word you’ll increase it’s chances of survival.”

I’ve adopted succisive. So, you could say I’m bringing succisive back!
