Overview

They are twelve men who shouldn’t be alive. They have survived the sudden blinding sandstorm that crippled their air freighter. Survived a desperate crash landing in the Sahara of Central Libya. Survived to face the slow, dry, agonizing death of the desert. Twelve men with one hope: to build a new plane from the wreckage of their Skytruck and make a flight out of hell.

Only one man could build such a plane: Stringer, the brilliant and obsessed engineer. Only one man could fly it: Towns, the arrogant and tormented pilot. Both had been aboard the Skytruck, but both are mortal enemies whose consuming hatred for each other is a danger greater than the desert itself.

I had read the book way back when. It was a great book then and still is. Highly recommended.

You could taste the dryness of their mouths and the sand. This is a good story - not overly exciting, and a little hard to follow the character's names, but an overall good book. Worth the rental. I think the movie was a little more exciting.

Pretty Good

Written over 40 years ago, Flight of the Phoenix feels a little slow at times, especially in light of today's short-attention-span pop lit, but this throwback by Elleston Trevor is a solid adventure story about the mental struggles of survival in harsh conditions and the bitter choices that must be made when life is on the line. A taut read, and with a great narration by Grover Gardner this is an easy book to recommend to anyone looking for a compelling and inspiring tale of hope and survival.

An amazing adventure of self-determination and will-power. A great read. It was hard for me to get out of my car as I was so interested in what was going to happen to these guys. Only wish there was more information about what happened to them after their ordeal.

Intensely captivating!

This is a great survival story. Anyone interested in men's adventures through catostrophic odds, mother nature's cruelty, and men at their wit's end will enjoy this book. Great narrator as well.
